Still of the Riddick motion comic

A very cool animated prequel has been released for the upcoming "Riddick" starring Vin Diesel. It's actually a motion comic titled "Blindsided" and it details events that take place between "The Chronicles of Riddick" and the upcoming sequel. As the animated prequel and trailers suggest, we can surely expect a return to Riddick's dark side in the new film directed by David Twohy ("Pitch Black"). The film also stars Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff and Dave Bautista. "Riddick" opens on September 6, 2013.

Gina Carano Pictures
Avengelyne Comics Cover

MMA fighter and actress Gina Carano ("Haywire", "Fast & Furious 6") is working together with comics creator Rob Liefeld to produce a big screen adaptation of Liefeld's comic "Avengelyne" originally published in 1995. The film is inteneded as an action vehicle for Carano who would star as an angel who battles demons and monsters. Carano and Liefeld will be present at this year's Comic-Con to promote the new project. For more details, here is the character bio from wikipedia:
"Avengelyne was the most feared warrior in Heaven's Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium, the outer fortress of Hell, to confront the Devil himself. She is a fallen angel, banished from Heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood, which, once extracted from her body, could be used as a weapon or a miracle once empowered by quoting verses from the Bible. Although he appeared truly angry, God was trying to prepare Avengelyne for a coming war for which she would need to be strengthened.

Keeping her faith in the Lord even on Earth, Avengelyne began to fight the demons she found while there. Eventually, one of her enemies, the demon lord B'Liale, sent a demon, Kyle Wagner, to seduce Avengelyne and father a powerful demon child. God sent Passover, the Angel of Death, to kill Avengelyne for her involvement, but the child, Magog, was born prior to the angel's arrival, and so together Passover and Avengelyne drove the demon-spawn away.

Seeing her devotion to him was still strong, God allowed Avengelyne to live, and she still fights demons on Earth. Eventually, when Armageddon occurs, Avengelyne will lead Heaven's Warhost, with Passover as her second-in-command."

punisher logo tim bradstreet
A new Punisher short film called "Dirty Laundry" was shown at this year's Comic-Con. The short stars Thomas Jane, who reprises his role as Frank Castle aka The Punisher, a character he first played in 2004's "The Punisher". This is not an official Marvel presentation, which Jane makes perfectly clear in the following statement :
"I wanted to make a fan film for a character I've always loved and believed in - a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It's been a blast to be a part of from start to finish -- we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it"
So, don't get your hopes up for a sequel to the 2004 movie, just yet. Still, who knows ? Maybe this will get Marvel moving on a new Punisher film. The short looks great and feels great. It's appropriately violent and gives us a neat tagline quote : "What's the difference between justice and punishment ?" Using the score composed by Hans Zimmer for the Joker in the "The Dark Knight" is a nice touch and fits the atmosphere. And I still maintain the opinion that Thomas Jane was the best Punisher and it's a shame that he never got the chance to do a sequel.

A few more details about the short. It's directed by Phil Joanou ("Gridiron Gang", "State of Grace"), written by Chad St. John (who wrote the upcoming "Motor City" starring Gerard Butler) and produced by Adi Shankar ("The Grey", "Machine Gun Preacher"). Also starring is Ron Perlman. And, the logo you see in the picture above is the new Punisher logo designed by Tim Bradstreet.
