Jamie Foxx picture

Jamie Foxx is set to star in the long-gestating "Spawn" reboot directed by comic creator Todd McFarlane. The reboot has been teased for years and with Foxx on board to star in the lead role, things might finally move forward a little faster.

"Spawn" tells the story of Al Simmons, a highly trained Force Recon Marine, who is recruited for black ops missions by the CIA, and is subsequently betrayed and killed. His soul is sent to Hell for his deeds as a CIA operative, where he strikes a deal to become a Hellspawn warrior in exchange for being able to see his wife one last time. Endowed with a demonic symbiotic armor, he becomes an antihero who takes on the city's criminal elements and becomes involved in a battle between Heaven, Earth and Hell.

The first attempt to bring Spawn to the big screen was in 1997, starring Michael Jai White, but the film's modest commercial success killed any plans for a franchise. McFarlane's reboot will be produced by Jason Blum's Blumhouse, and it won't be a classic origin story:
"The scariest movies, from Jaws to John Carpenter’s The Thing, or The Grudge and The Ring, the boogeyman doesn’t talk…It confuses people because of the comic book industry, and because they all default into their Captain America mindset and I keep saying, no, get into John Carpenter’s mindset or Hitchcock. This is not a man in a rubber suit, it’s not a hero that’s going to come and save the damsel. It’s none of that. At the end of the movie, I’m hoping that the audience will say either, is this a ghost that turns into a man, or is it a man that turns into a ghost? I’ve got a trilogy in mind here, and I’m not inclined in this first movie to do an origin story. I’m mentally exhausted from origin stories. Luckily, there’s a movie that just came out that helps my cause. In A Quiet Place, the first thing on screen is a card in black and white letters that says Day 89. It doesn’t care about what happened in those first 88 days. There are a couple headlines, but then we are on day 450. That movie doesn’t worry about explaining and giving all the answers. What it said in that case was, if you can hang on for a story of survival of this family, this movie will make complete sense for you."

Vin Diesel Picture
"Fast & Furious" star Vin Diesel has signed on to lead Sony's upcoming sci-fi actioner "Bloodshot" based on the Valiant comic book series of the same name. The film will mark the feature directorial debut of Blur Studios creative director Dave Wilson, who was in charge of the CG cinematic sequences from video games like "Star Wars: The Force Unleased II", "Mass Effect 2" and "The Division". According to reports from various sources, the film is expected to be similar in tone to 1980s sci-fi action classics like "Robocop" and "Terminator".

"Bloodshot" was created in 1992 by Kevin VanHook, Don Perlin and Bob Layton. Its titular protagonist, whose real name is Ray Garrison, is a former soldier brought back from the dead with powers of regeneration and meta-morphing made possible through nanites injected into his blood. In the comics, the character sets out to discover who he really is, because his memory had been wiped repeatedly, and exact revenge on those who are responsible for what he has become while also coming to terms with his new and improved self. To this end he enlists the help of another group of augmented combatants called Chainsaw.

The screenplay was written by Oscar-nominated "Arrival" scribe Eric Heisserer and the film is being produced by Neal H. Moritz ("Fast & Furious"), and executive-produced by Matthew Vaughn ("Kick-Ass") and Dan Mintz. Filming is set to begin in July.

Melissa McCarthy Picture
The Kitchen Comic Book Cover
Melissa McCarthy ("Bridesmaids") is in talks to star alongside Tiffany Haddish ("Girls Trip") in the crime drama "The Kitchen", which is being developed by New Line and DC Entertainment. The film will be "Straight Outta Compton" scribe Andrea Berloff's directorial debut, and it's based on the 2014 DC Vertigo comic book series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle.

The story is set in 1970s New York and focuses on the Irish mafia. The protagonists are three female anti-heroes, mob wives, who take over their husbands' criminal enterprise after they were arrested by the FBI, and run the business even more ferociously than their spouses ever did.

McCarthy can also be seen in Marielle Heller's drama "Can You Ever Forgive Me ?", which opens in October, and this summer's comedy "Life of the Party" directed by her husband Ben Falcone. She is also set to star in the holiday musical "Margie Clause", which she is also producing for New Line.

Dwayne Johnson to star as Doc Savage
Dwayne Johnson is keeping busy lately. Besides the "Baywatch" reboot, the "Fast 8" sequel, the "Jumanji" reboot, the "Big Trouble in Little China" remake, more "Journey sequels, "Rampage", "Shazam!" and the TV series "Ballers", the actor has now added the comic book adaptation "Doc Savage" to his already impressive to-do list.

Dog Savage is a character originally published in American pulp magazines during the 1930s and 1940s. Throughout the years Savage has appeared in comics, a movie, on radio, and in numerous other works.

The new film adaptation will be directed by Shane Black ("The Nice Guys") for Sony. Black will also co-write the script alongside Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry, and according to the director, the film is said to be shot "as though it’s in the ‘30s, including all the Capra-esque elements of 1930s films like You Can't Take It With You.

Johnson himself provided a pretty great description of the character:
"Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about “Doc” Savage is that he’s the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called “Man of Bronze”, retreats to his “Fortress of Solitude” in the Arctic etc etc.

Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women’s perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything.

But here’s the #1 reason I’m excited to become Doc Savage.. HE’S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO! Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious."

Ruth Negga cast as female lead in AMC's Preacher
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." actress Ruth Negga has been cast as the female lead in AMC's pilot "Preacher". The show is an adaptation of the 1990s comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and it's developed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

The comics focus on a Texas preacher who is accidentally possessed by a supernatural creature named Genesis, the offspring of an angel and a demon. The possession gives the preacher the ability to control other people. He then begins a journey across the United States attempting to find God, who abandoned Heaven the moment Genesis was born.

Ruth Negga, who is the first actor cast in the pilot, will star as Tulip, the preacher's ex-girlfriend who joins him on his quest. Here's how she is described:
"...a volatile, action-packed, sexified force of nature, a capable, unrepentant criminal with a love of fashion and ability to construct helicopter-downing bazookas out of coffee cans and corn shine who’s not afraid to steal, kill or corn cob-stab her way out of a bad situation."

Preacher Comic Book
Rogen and Goldberg wrote the script and will direct the pilot, while "Breaking Bad" writer Sam Catlin will assume showrunner duties. The pilot will begin filming this summer and will premiere sometime next year. Until then, here is the official synopsis from AMC:
"Based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s twisted ’90s comic book series, “Preacher” is about Jesse Custer, a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the three embark on a journey to literally find God."

Dwayne Johnson
For about a month now, Dwayne Johnson has been teasing fans about playing either Shazam or Black Adam in an upcoming "Shazam" adaptation based on the DC Comics character. Now, Johnson has confirmed via Twitter that he will play the villain Black Adam : "Kneel at his feet or get crushed by his boot." (below). The Warner Bros. produced super-hero flick is scheduled for 2016 and will probably be linked to "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" which will establish a wider cinematic DC Comics universe.

For more on Black Adam, here is an official description of the character from DC Comics:
"Long ago, the council of wizards—powerful beings that held dominion over all magic in the world—chose the warrior Black Adam as their champion, granting him vast magical powers and abilities. However, that power only further skewed Adam’s already maligned moral compass, and rather than use his newfound gifts to help others, he used it to dominate them. Adam turned against the wizards and after a brutal battle was imprisoned for thousands of years. But now he is free once more, and his insatiable quest to conquer the world, to control all magic, continues. The only thing that stands in his way is Shazam!, the new champion of magic—and Black Adam will do anything in his power to destroy him and assert his position as the true ruler of the world. Driven by a need to rule, incredibly arrogant and one of the most powerful beings on the planet, Black Adam lives by a simple creed: kneel at his feet or be crushed by his boot."

Hercules Dwayne Johnson

Actor Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock has tweeted several images from the set of "Hercules: The Thracian Wars". You can't actually see Johnson very well in these photos apart from his back, but it does a good job of teasing the production values. One of the images actually provides a first look at an impressively massive set that recalls the grand scale sets of the old historical epics. It also looks expensive as hell. The film is directed by Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour", "X-Men: The Last Stand") and it is based on the comic book created by Admira Wijaya and Steve Moore. Also starring Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan, John Hurt, Rebecca Ferguson, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Askel Hennie and Reece Ritchie, "Hercules: The Thracian Wars" opens on July 25, 2014.
