Oscars 2015: BIRDMAN Wins Best Picture and Best Director

The 87th Academy Awards have ended. Neil Patrick Harris was arguably the worst part of the awards show, mostly because of a batch of bad jokes that made him clearly uncomfortable and somewhat unlikeable as the host. I honestly expected a bit more energy in his routine, but it all felt incredibly flat after a relatively short and dull opening musical moment.

The awards themselves were offered to the usual suspects. "Birdman" picked up 4 Oscars, including Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay, and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" also took home four awards for the more technical categories like Costumes, Art Direction and Score. Julianne Moore, Eddie Redmayne, Patricia Arquette and J.K. Simmons nabbed Oscars for their amazing performances, while "Selma", "Interstellar", "American Sniper" and "The Imitation Game" each took home one award. In the animated feature category Disney won for a second consecutive year with "Big Hero 6" and Poland's "Ida" won Best Foreign Language Film.

Box-Office: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 Dominated Thanksgiving Week

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" remained undisputed this weekend with a 3-day gross of $56 million, making it the third highest-grossing Thanksgiving release. However, the previous installment in the franchise, "Catching Fire" performed much better with $110 million grossed in the 5 days of Thanksgiving week last year. 

Mockingjay's strong performance meant that this week's new releases had to contend with the leftover scraps. "Penguins of Madagascar" opened in second place with $25 million over the weekend and $36 million in the 5 days since Thanksgiving, a weak performance for the DreamWorks' spinoff which cost $132 million to make.

Another victim was "Horrible Bosses 2", which ranked fifth with $23M million over the same 5-day timeframe. The comedy sequel wasn't so expensive with a budget estimated at $42 million, so they shouldn't have a problem turning a profit. The result isn't all that shocking since the original "Horrible Bosses" grossed $28 million in its opening weekend, and this wouldn't be the first comedy sequel to gross less than the original. For a case in point, "The Hangover" sequels each earned less than the previous installment.

Meanwhile, "Big Hero 6" and "Interstellar" are still performing incredibly well, with the latter actually showing an increase from last weekend, possibly due to the fact that the trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was shown in 20 IMAX theaters before Nolan's film over the 5-day holiday.

Box-Office: HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY PART 1 Year's Biggest Opening With $123 Million

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" made an impressive debut and conquered this weekend's box-office with $123 million, making it the biggest opening of 2014. This year's previous record holder was "Transformers: Age of Extinction" which earned $100 million in its first three days. For "Mockingjay Part 1" the result is a bit behind initial projections, but still quite impressive. It ranks as the 15th opening weekend of all-time, but it fell behind the franchise's previous installment, "Catching Fire" which opened with $158 million. Overseas the film earned an additional $152 million.

Still going strong in second and third place are the Disney animated sci-fi "Big Hero 6" with a domestic total of $135 million, and Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" with $120 million domestically and $329 million from foreign markets. Nolan's sci-fi epic is doing very well overseas, but Disney's feature only managed to take $49 million outside the U.S., which is pretty weak.

Last week's No. 1 movie, "Dumb and Dumber To" took a steep dive, falling 62% to No. 4 with $13.8 million over the weekend which brings the sequel's total to an okay $57 million in 10 days.

The Stephen Hawking biopic "The Theory of Everything" broke into the top 10 in its third week in release after expanding in more theaters and grossing $1.5 million this weekend. The film, an expected awards contender, will expand further in the following week.

Box-Office: DUMB AND DUMBER TO Jim Carrey's Biggest Opener Since 2003's BRUCE ALMIGHTY

Jim Carrey has a lot to celebrate because his newest film, the sequel "Dumb and Dumber To" is the No. 1 movie at the box-office this week with a 3-day gross of $38.1 million. This is Carrey's first No.1 movie since 2003's "Bruce Almighty", although not his highest grossing opening weekend. Of all the films in Carrey's resume, "Dumb and Dumber To"s debut ranks fifth. Close behind the comedy sequel is Disney's "Big Hero 6" with a strong $36 million, a 35% drop from last week. Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" is also holding well in third place with $29 million over the weekend. The sci-fi epic's strongest results, however, are overseas, with a total gross of $224 million which adds to a global sum of $321 million in 10 days.

Behind all the heavy hitters lies the smaller romantic drama "Beyond the Lights", which placed fourth with $6.5 million, a disappointment since initial projections looked somewhat better. However, the film only cost $7 million to make, so it isn't a total loss.

A significant event of this week's box-office is the impressive performance of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Birdman" which made its way into the top 10 with $2.7 million from 857 theaters, which is really really good.

Box-Office: BIG HERO 6 Leads INTERSTELLAR With $56 million

Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" failed to win the box-office duel with Disney Animation's "Big Hero 6" which edged out the sci-fi epic by a mere $6 million. The animated adaptation of the Marvel comics earned $56 million in its first weekend and an additional $23 million from foreign markets. Nolan's new film starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain scored an equally impressive result with $50 million and an even more impressive $80 million overseas. This marks the fourth time in box-office history that two movies opened with more than $50 million in the same weekend. And what's more of a coincidence is that both movies had budgets of $165 million.

While the first two entries in the top 10 summed up over $100 million, the other films had to fight over what was left. "Gone Girl" and "Ouija" placed third and fourth, respectively, with $6 million each and the impressive "St. Vincent" climbed to fifth place with $5.7 million over the weekend, bringing its total cume to $27 million.

7 New BIG HERO 6 Clips: Pixar and Marvel Join Forces

Seven new clips have been released for Pixar's "Big Hero 6". Based on Marvel's comic book series, the Don Hall and Chris Williams directed animated feature tells the story of the special bond that develops between the inflatable robot Baymax (Scott Adsit) and prodigy Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter), who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes. The voice cast also includes Daniel Henney, T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr., Genesis Rodriguez, James Cromwell, Alan Tudyk, and Maya Rudolph.

Today we have a new trailer and two viral videos for Pixar's awesome-looking "Big Hero 6", an adaptation of Marvel's comic book of the same name. The trailer is a Sizzle preview from the New York Comic-Con and it features Fall Out Boy's new song, "Immortals". Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, the film features the voices of Scott Adsit, Ryan Potter, Daniel Henney, T.J. New BIG HERO 6 Trailers and Character Images

Two new trailers and some character images have been released for Pixar's "Big Hero 6". The animated feature is an adaptation of Marvel's comic which tells the story of a brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. The trailers are a new domestic theatrical trailer and a Japanese international trailer, and the images offer a look at the characters along with a description for each. The voice cast features T.J. Miller, Maya Rudolph, Josh Hutcherson, Genesis Rodriguez, Samuel L. Jackson, Damon Wayans Jr., Ryan Potter, Freddie Highmore and Jamie Chung.

"Big Hero 6" opens in theaters on November 7th.
