Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty") has signed on to star in "The Huntsman" opposite Chris Hemsworth. The film is a spinoff/prequel of "Snow White and the Huntsman" and will be directed by VFX supervisor and second unit director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who replaced Frank Darabont ("Shawshank Redemption"). Darabont spent quite a lot of time on the film's script but dropped out of the director's chair due to "creative differences". The story will take place before the events of Snow White and will focus on the Huntsman and Ravenna (Charlize Theron). Emily Blunt is also set to star as Ravenna's sister, the prequel's villain. "The Huntsman" will be released on April 22, 2016.

Girls, Mob City, Eastbound & Down New Seasons

New trailers have been released for the upcoming seasons of the following TV series:
  • The third season of HBO's "Girls" starring Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet. It's actually not a trailer, but a production teaser, showing photos from the set which tease the new season. Season 3 premieres in early 2014.

  • The first season of Frank Darabont's new series "Mob City" which tells the story of the decades-long battle between Los Angeles Police Chief William Parker (Neal McDonough) and mob figure Mickey Cohen (Jeremy Luke). Darabont is known for his exceptional films "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile", as well as for creating AMC's "The Walking Dead". "Mob City" also stars Ed Burns, Jon Bernthal, Milo Ventimiglia, Gregory Itzin, Robert Knepper, Alexa Davalos and Simon Pegg. The series premieres on TNT on December 4, 2013.

  • The fourth and final season of HBO's comedy series "Eastbound and Down" starring Danny McBride. Season 4 premieres on September 29, 2013.

Snake Plissken, Godzill, Hansel and Gretel
  • "Escape from New York", John Carpenter's 1981 classic post-apocalyptic flick will be rebooted. The original starred Kurt Russell as the eye-patch wearing badass sociopath Snake Plissken who is sent into Manhattan, now a maximum-security prison, to save the President, played by Donald Pleasence. The reboot will be produced by Joel Silver ("The Matrix", "Die Hard") and the plans are to give the movie a complete makeover, including an origin story, all building up to a potential trilogy.

  • Production has started on the "Godzilla" reboot directed by Gareth Edwards ("Monsters"). The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston. Also, according to the official press release, Ken Watanabe ("Inception", "The Last Samurai") has now joined the cast. The reboot will take a realistic approach to the story. In short, they're doing it the "The Dark Knight" way, which is basically the go-to movie concept when trying to reboot anything these days. On a positive note, Frank Darabont ("The Walking Dead", "Shawshank Redemption") has been involved in writing the screenplay. "Godzilla" opens on May 16, 2014. In 3D.

  • And, of course, when Hollywood is not rebooting movies, they're making sequels. Such is the case with "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters", the campy B-flick starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton. It may have underwhelmed critics, but box-office returns have been more than generous ($205 million worldwide against a budget of $50 million). So, in a completely unsurprising move, Paramount Pictures has announced that they have approved the sequel. It is unknown if Tommy Wirkola will return to direct, nor if Renner and Arterton will reprise their roles. All we have for now, is a green light.

  • And when Hollywood isn't rebooting or making sequels to already profitable franchises, they're remaking classic properties. "The Count of Monte Cristo" will be the target of a remake this time. They use the word "remake", but it actually sounds like a new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' novel, since they haven't actually named the movie they're remaking. David S. Goyer ("The Dark Knight", "Man of Steel") will direct the film from a script written by Michael Robert Johnson ("Sherlock Holmes"). Rumors state that it will be a "19th Century Dark Knight" (again with the Dark Knight) that will have a "graphic novel" feel to it. I have a feeling this will not be one for fans of Dumas' book.

Bryan Cranston Picture
Elizabeth Olsen Picture

The promising new "Godzilla" reboot is moving forward. The film, directed by Gareth Edwards ("Monsters"), is expected to star Aaron Taylor-Johnson ("Kick-Ass", "Anna Karenina") in the lead role, and recently Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") and Elizabeth Olsen ("Martha Marcy May Marlene", "Silent House") are in talks to join the cast. The plot has not been revealed so far, but the original draft of the script by Max Borenstein has just been rewritten into a final draft by Frank Darabont ("The Walking Dead", "Shawshank Redemption", "The Mist"). Darabont has stated that the reboot will represent a return to Godzilla's roots and the giant creature will be portrayed as a "terrifying force of nature", which sounds pretty cool. Additional rumors seem to indicate that at least two more monsters will appear in the film, beside the titular creature. "Godzilla" is scheduled for release on May 16, 2014.

Here is the teaser trailer for the second season of "The Walking Dead", the Zombie apocalypse TV series created, produced and written by Frank Darabont ("The Green Mile", "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Mist"). I'm not sure whether or not this is legit, though. The title says Fan Teaser and the producers supposedly denied it's an official teaser. Nevertheless, it still pretty cool. It could still be some sort of leaked viral video. The new season begins on October 21 and will feature 13 episodes. Click here to read the review for the first season of "The Walking Dead".

THE WALKING DEAD : SEASON 1

Frank Darabont creates one of television's most daring projects. Strong horror and gore, powerful drama and a great cast join together in perfect gruesome harmony in AMC's "The Walking Dead". The story of a group of people trying to survive the undead outbreak is by far one of the most enjoyable TV series of 2010 and you might even love it without being a fan of the zombie genre. Season 1 features six episodes. In October, this year, AMC will start airing the second season. For more details about Season 1, check out my review on this blog. Available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

THE NEXT THREE DAYS

Award-winning writer and director Paul Haggis ("Crash", "In the Valley of Ellah") approaches the thriller genre with "The Next Three Days", but the results are not very satisfying. Sure, Russel Crowe and Elizabeth Banks are charismatic leads and make it worthwile, but the ludicrous plotting and implausible second half take away from the overall experience. So, if you really like Crowe or Banks, you might enjoy this movie, otherwise it's an iffy proposition. One thing's for sure, this is no "Prison Break". Available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

MORNING GLORY

Romantic comedies are a dime a dozen, but once in a while something unexpected happens. One of these very common rom-coms manages to surprise and exhilarate. "Morning Glory" might not be the perfect example, but it sure comes close to it. A perfect match-up of actors, Rachel McAdams & Patrick Wilson (the young generation) and Harrison Ford & Diane Keaton (the elderly generation), helps the movie's brainless script turn into an enjoyable movie, derivative, but fun. Director Roger Michell ("Notting Hill", "Changing Lanes") is good with actors and it shows. Available on Blu-Ray and DVD

JACKASS 3

Seriously, if you haven't heard of the "Jackass" franchise, you're better off not knowing. There's not much to say about this one. You either hate it or love it. The crazy stunts, the insane recklessness and ultimate disdain for all life and human integrity are here for you mortifying enjoyment. If you can stomach it, you will love it. And it's all in gross out 3D for the first time ever (like that's some kind of accomplishment). Prepare to witness the end of civilised life as we know it. Available on a Two-Disc 3D DVD and Blu-Ray Combo Edition.
