Gemma Arterton
British star Gemma Arterton ("Byzantium", "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time") is set to star as soul legend and Swinging Sixties icon Dusty Springfield, whose greatest hits include "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Just a Little Lovin", in an upcoming biopic produced by Elizabeth Karlsen ("Carol") and Stephen Woolley ("The Crying Game").

The film will be set in 1968 at the peak of Springfield's popularity, following the singer's journey to Memphis, Tennessee, to record her career-defining record, "Dusty in Memphis", which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. It will also explore her struggles with the politics of the recording studio and the city, as well as her encounter with the music of Motown, her stand against apartheid policies during her aborted South African tour, and her thorny brushes with men in the music industry.

The film will be written and directed by "Carol" scribe Phyllis Nagy. This will be Nagy's feature film directorial debut. Filming will take place in the U.K. and U.S. in Spring 2019.

Arterton has stated the following about the role:

"I have been an admirer of Dusty Springfield since I was a teenager: her effortless husky voice, the way she conveyed emotion through music, how she helped bring Motown to the UK. Dusty was ahead of her time in many ways and inspired so many future artists. She was generous, witty, mercurial, shy, extrovert and a true English eccentric. I simply cannot wait to play her."

in-theaters-san-andreas-aloha-barely-lethal-gemma-bovery

In theaters this week we have two new wide releases. First is the disaster movie "San Andreas" starring Dwayne Johnson. The film has been getting a rather mixed critical reception, but I suppose the trailers are really enough for anyone to know if it's the kind of spectacle that they can enjoy. The second is Cameron Crowe's romantic dramedy "Aloha", which unfortunately is not the comeback everyone was expecting from the director of "Jerry Maguire". In limited release two noteworthy films are the teen action comedy "Barely Lethal" starring Hailee Steinfeld, Samuel L. Jackson and Jessica Alba, and the dramedy "Gemma Bovery" starring Gemma Arterton and Fabrice Luchini. More about each movie after the jump.
