"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is a new sci-fi adventure from French director Luc Besson ("The Fifth Element"). The filmmaker raised an impressive and unprecedented $177 million (including crowd funding and Besson's own money) over seven years, making it both the most expensive European and independent film ever made.

The film is based on the comic book series "Valérian and Laureline" written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières, and specifically the sixth album in the series titled "Ambassador of the Shadows". Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne star as the comics' titular heroes, who are tasked with safeguarding Alpha, a vast metropolis and home to species from a thousand planets, against a dark, mysterious threat.

The cast also includes Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, Rutger Hauer, Sam Spruell, John Goodman, Elizabeth Debicki, Mathieu Kassovitz and Alain Chabat.

"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" opened in theaters in the U.S. on July 21st, 2017. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the film's imaginative visuals and impressive effects, but complained about the chemistry of the lead actors and Besson's writing.

The film has also been having a rough time at the box-office. In the U.S. it opened with $17 million and grossed only $36.9 million in 19 days, while overseas it managed to rake in $51.6 million. Pundits estimate that it would need to gross around $350-400 million worldwide to break even and justify a sequel. The film has yet to open in China, Russia, South Korea and Italy, but even so, breaking even seems like an impossible task at this point.

valerian-and-the-city-of-a-thousand-planets-teaser-trailer-poster

The first trailer and poster for Luc Besson's highly anticipated epic sci-fi adventure "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" have finally been released. Everyone expecting that Besson's new film will be a modern "The Fifth Element" should be satisfied by the gleeful excess demonstrated in this first trailer, and by the looks of it, it just might be the director's return to form following a series of lackluster films.

The film stars Dane DeHaan as the titular Valerian, a special operative working for the government of the human territories, who embarks on a mission with his partner Laureline (Cara Delevingne) that takes them to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe.

The film also stars Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Rutger Hauer, Kris Wu, Matthieu Kassovitz and Rihanna.

"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" opens in theaters on July 21, 2017.

Rihanna to star in Luc Besson's sci-fi epic Valerian
Rihanna is set to return to the big screen in Luc Besson's new film "Valerian", also known as "Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets". The news was tweeted by Besson himself and he also stated that she will have a "big part", although specific details are not known at the moment.

Based on a series of 1960s French graphic novels, the film is a science fiction adventure set in the 28th century that focuses on the titular Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and his "sharp-witted and sharp-tongued partner" Laureline (Cara Delevingne) as they travel the universe through space and time to protect our planet. Clive Owen is also set to star as their commander, Arün Filitt.

The release date has been set for July 21, 2017.

For a more detailed look at the plot, here is the official synopsis:
"Rooted in the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline- visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga. Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him. Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha's seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger."
