Sony's
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" fulfilled expectations this weekend and stormed the box-office with a $92 million debut. The sequel performed better than the first installment in the reboot series, which grossed $62 million in its opening weekend, but there is a slight problem with the official numbers that make a real comparison impossible.
"The Amazing Spider-Man" was released on a Tuesday, so it actually grossed $137 million in six days, making the weekend gross irrelevant in comparison with the sequel's weekend numbers.
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" did not overtake the first and last of the
Sam Raimi films, which managed much better results:
"Spider-Man" - $114 million,
"Spider-Man 3" - $151 million. It did, however, gross more than
"Spider-Man 2" ($88 million). Meanwhile,
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" was mauled by critics and many reviewers compared it to either
"Batman Forever" or
"Batman and Robin". Although fan reactions have been mostly positive, it remains to be seen if word-of-mouth will have a positive or a negative impact on the film's box-office.
