Margot Robbie to Star in New PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Movie for Disney

Oscar nominated actress Margot Robbie ("Bombshell", "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood") has signed on to star in a new female-fronted "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie for Disney, which will be completely separate from the already announced franchise reboot that is in developement by "Pirates" scribe Ted Elliott and "Chernobyl" creator Craig Mazin.

The screenplay will be penned by "Birds of Prey" and "Bumblebee" writer Christina Hodson. The film, which is currently in early development, is not intended to be a spinoff, but rather an original story with new characters set in the "Pirates" world. Jerry Bruckheimer is attached to produce both the reboot and this standalone installment.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise has proven itself extremely lucrative for Disney. The five films starring Johnny Depp have grossed a total of $1.5 billion domestically and $3.07 billion internationally.

Hodson, who is at the moment one of Hollywood's most sought-after blockbuster writers, is also set to write the scripts for the DC superhero movies "The Flash" and "Batgirl".

Robbie will also return to the DC Comics universe in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" sequel.

New PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES Trailer and Poster

Walt Disney has released a new trailer and poster for the sequel "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales". The fifth installment in the franchise is directed by "Kon Tiki" helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and it stars Johnny Depp, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, David Wenham, Geoffrey Rush, Keith Richards, Stephen Graham, Golshifteh Farahani and Paul McCartney.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" opens in theaters on May 26th.

Official PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 Synopsis and Title Revealed

With production on the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie already underway in Queesnland, Australia, Disney decided to officially reveal the film's title and synopsis. The title is "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", which isn't really a big surprise, since the name surfaced as a rumor last year. The synopsis, however, is quite interesting:

"Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas."

So far the cast includes Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites, Golshifteh Farahani, Martin Klebba, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin R. McNally, Stephen Graham and Adam Brown, with rumors indicating that Orlando Bloom might also return to the franchise.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" will be released on July 7, 2017.

Javier Bardem in Talks to Star in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5

Javier Bardem ("Skyfall") is in talks to join Disney's sequel "Pirates of the Caribbean 5". Bardem is negotiating to play the villain, a ghost captain who blames Jack Sparrow for the death of his brother and sets out on a quest for a supernatural item that will help him take his revenge. The role was initially rumored to have been offered to Christoph Waltz, but it is definitely Bardem who is in talks now.

The film has been in pre-production for over a year and it will be directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg ("Kon-Tiki"). Johnny Depp is set to return to the franchise as soon as he finishes work on "Alice in Wonderland 2" and he will be joined by Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Ian McShane and Stephen Graham, with the possibility of cameo appearances from Orlando Bloom and Keith Richards.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 5" will begin filming next year in February in Australia and the release date has been set for July 2017.

NEWS UPDATE: Ben Affleck Directs TV Pilot, J.K. Rowling's New Film, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and David Fincher

While Ben Affleck is currently enjoying the hype around his involvement in the "Man of Steel" sequel in which he will play Batman, the actor/director will also make his directorial debut for the small screen with the crime drama "The Middle Man". The series is created and scripted by Glenn Gordon Caron ("Medium") and it will focus on the attempts of an FBI agent to infiltrate the Boston Italian mafia in the 1960s. Affleck will direct the pilot, but it remains to be seen if Fox picks up the series for a full season. Production begins early 2014. Here is a more detailed synopsis:

"The Middle Man is the story of Rudy MacAteer, an FBI agent charged with taking down the Italian mafia, and his confidential informant, Irish-American gangster Mickey Flood. MacAteer’s efforts inadvertently give rise to the Irish mob, as he finds himself bending the laws he is governed by."

"Harry Potter" writer J.K. Rowling will reteam with Warner Bros. for a new potential film franchise inspired by the Harry Potter books. It was only a matter of time before Warner would decide that the extremely popular Potter franchise needs to go on. The new film is inspired by the "witches and wizards" world of Rowling's imagination and it is based on "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" which takes place in New York 70 years prior to the events of "Harry Potter". The original story will be scripted by J.K. Rowling and will be the first in a new series. Here is the press release with more details:

"Warner Bros. Entertainment today announced an expanded creative partnership with world-renowned, best-selling author J.K. Rowling. At the center of the partnership is a new film series from Rowling’s world of witches and wizards, inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the adventures of the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander. The announcement was made by Kevin Tsujihara, Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will be an original story and will mark Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is planned as the first picture in a new film series. Set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted Harry Potter fans.

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” said Rowling. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”

In addition to the film series, “Fantastic Beasts” will also be developed across the Studio’s video game, consumer products and digital initiatives businesses, including enhanced links with Pottermore.com, Rowling’s digital online experience built around the Harry Potter stories.

The Studio’s expanded partnership with Rowling also covers the continued expansion of its Harry Potter activities, including the wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks in conjunction with partner Universal Parks and Resorts (currently in Orlando, FL; opening in Hollywood, CA and Osaka, Japan), digital initiatives (including Pottermore), video games, consumer products and visitor attractions.

In addition, Warner Bros. will serve as the worldwide TV distributor (excluding the U.K.) of J.K. Rowling’s upcoming television adaptation for the BBC of “The Casual Vacancy,” her best-selling first novel aimed at adult audiences. This miniseries begins production in 2014.

The relationship will be managed in London by Neil Blair of The Blair Partnership, Rowling’s literary agency, and Josh Berger, President & Managing Director, Warner Bros. UK, Ireland and Spain, who will serve as Warner Bros.’ chief business contact for all J.K. Rowling initiatives going forward.

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.

As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 5" has been pushed back. While Disney' sequel was initially scheduled for release on July 10, 2015, the studio has announced that it will probably be released sometime in 2016. No exact date has been fixed, but Disney states that they want to take their time and make sure that it's as good as it can be. And, boy, do they need to take their time ! The fourth film in the franchise was a mess, even compared to the franchise's lowly standards, although the plot was less convoluted than that of the previous installments. The new sequel is reportedly titled "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" and it will be directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg ("Kon-Tiki") from a script by Jeff Nathanson ("Catch Me if You Can").

David Fincher's new film "Gone Girl" has gathered an impressive cast. The film is an adpatation of Gillian Flynn's novel of the same name and the story centers on the disappearance of a man’s wife and the resulting investigation (synopsis below). The cast so far includes Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Carrie Coon and Neil Patrick Harris. Here is the book's synopsis:

"On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. New Directors Hired for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise is not exactly doing great. With the overblown sequels in the main trilogy and a fourth film that tried to reboot the formula but was too much of a muddled mess to be a good sequel, it's no surprise that Disney is looking for new directions for their fifth installment. And so, the studio and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have come across directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg who were recently nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for their historical high-seas adventure "Kon-Tiki". Both have been signed on to direct the sequel, and one can see how this might actually work. I think Disney's decision is smart and bold, but it remains to be seen how well the two helmers can handle a big budget visual effects extravaganza like this. A first draft for the "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" script has already been written by Jeff Nathanson ("Catch Me If You Can") and Johnny Depp is signed on to return as Jack Sparrow. If all goes well, production should begin later this year.

JURASSIC PARK IV Release Date, DIE HARD 5 Rated R, Christopher Nolan's New Project and More

It's finally official. "Jurassic Park IV" will definitely get made and Universal Pictures has set a release date for June 13, 2014. Also, the studio decided that the fourth installment in the franchise will be in 3D. On April 5, this year, the original "Jurassic Park" will get a 3D re-release and it's possible the next two films will get a 3D conversion before the release of the new sequel. Steven Spielberg will only be involved as producer on the sequel.

Director Christopher Nolan's next project will be a sci-fi adventure called "Interstellar". The film's script was written by Jonathan Nolan, the director's brother, back when Steven Spielberg was attached to helm the project. The story is based on the work of physicist Kip Thorne and will involve wormholes, time travel and alternate dimensions. Now, Christopher Nolan will not only be directing and producing it, he will also be writing his own draft based on his brother's version. According to a report, the film "will depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest borders of our scientific understanding.".

Good news for fans of the original "Die Hard" trilogy. The new sequel, "A Good Day to Die Hard" will be rated R, which means it will feature all of the franchise's trademark violence and profanity, including the immortal catch-phrase "Yippee Ki-Yay Motherfucker !" which will probably be featured in all its vulgarity without being obscured by sound effects. That's of course a good thing if and only if director John Moore doesn't botch the job like he did with "Max Payne". "A Good Day to Die Hard" will be released on February 14.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 5" is moving forward as Disney hires screenwriter Jeff Nathanson ("Catch Me If You Can", "Tower Heist"). No other information is available at this point, but it's clear that the multi-billion dollar franchise is returning to the big screen. I only hope they improve on the terrible "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides". They really need some solid new ideas for this franchise, not just ideas that barely justify a sequel. They should even consider perhaps building towards a new trilogy.

Jack Reynor

Michael Bay has found a second male lead to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in "Transformers 4". Jack Reynor ("What Richard Did") will supposedly play the race-driver boyfriend of Wahlberg's daughter. With this occasion, Bay also confirmed that the new sequel is part of a second "Transformers" trilogy set 4 years after the events in "Dark of the Moon".

"I just hired a great new actor for Transformers 4 to star against Mark Wahlberg. Jack Reynor, he is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket. Pretty ballsy. Seriously who does that? Anyway I spotted him in a great little Irish movie WHAT RICHARD DID. This kid is the real deal.

Transformers 4, is not a reboot. That word has been floating around on the net.

This movie takes place exactly 4 years after the war in Chicago. The story makes a very natural transition, and reason as to why we have a whole new cast. This Transformers will feel very different then the last three. We are embarking on a new trilogy."

2011 Box-Office Top 10

2011 was a good year for blockbusters, with some that were worse than expected and others that completely surpassed expectations. When it comes down to box-office results, it's all about the usual suspects and it was certainly a great year for sequels, especially those with very long titles, like "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2", "Transformers: Dark of the Moon", "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1", which performed very well (despite harsh reviews in some cases). "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" comes out on May 20th, 2011. Though the original trilogy's director Gore Verbinski did not return for this one, directorial duties were assumed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago", "Memoirs of a Geisha"). I'm not a big fan of sequels, but this one seems to be more like the first Pirates movies, which is a good thing, because the following two films were long and tedious.

This movie can only go two ways : the thrilling fun ride that the first movie in the franchise was, or the overly long, complicated and boring path of the sequels. So far it feels closer to the first. Then again, we can never really know until it hits theaters. Penelope Cruz seems to be added just for the sake of having her name on the posters and not much else. The weight of this whole endeavour will probably fall on Depp's shoulders, as usual. The villain seems appropriately sinister and Geoffrey Rush's return is welcome.
