Jake Gyllenhaal Photo
Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal ("Brokeback Mountain", "Nightcrawler") is set to star as a villain in the upcoming sequel to "Spider-Man: Homecoming". The actor is in talks to star as the character Mysterio, first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964, a special effects wizard and stunt man who uses his expertise in illusions to become a supervillain.

Jon Watts will return to direct the sequel, along with Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, two of the first film's screenwriters. Tom Holland will reprise his role as the Marvel web-slinger.

The "Spider-Man: Homecoming" sequel will be released on July 5, 2019.

Gyllenhaal has a bunch of new films coming in 2019, including Daniel Espinosa's action drama "The Anarchists vs ISIS", the video game adaptation "The Division", and Brian Helgeland's crime thriller "Finest Kind". This year he can be seen in Dan Gilroy's horror "Velvet Buzzsaw" and Luca Guadagnino's mystery drama "Let It Fall Back".

weekend-box-office-it-movie-stephen-king

As expected, the new Stephen King adaptation "It" topped the charts over the weekend, but the big news is that it also managed to break a bunch of records. And not a moment too soon, as the summer box-office ended up being a disappointment. Meanwhile, the romantic comedy "Home Again" made an unimpressive debut.

weekend-box-office-report-dunkirk-girls-trip-valerian

Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" made a strong impression in its opening weekend, particularly for a non-franchise World War II movie, and the R-rated comedy "Girls Trip" proved a worthy adversary. Luc Besson's sci-fi epic "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets", however, proved to be a huge disappointment.

Sony and Marvel's "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is the third reboot of the iconic superhero franchise and the first to take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making it the sixteenth entry in the MCU.

Directed by Jon Watts ("Cop Car"), the film is set several months after the events of "Captain America: Civil War" and it stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, a high-school student from Queens, New York City, who is having a hard time balancing his personal life and his crime-fighting activity as Spider-Man under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Meanwhile, a new threat emerges in the form a super-villain called The Vulture (Michael Keaton).

The film also stars Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Toni Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Michael Chernus, Tyne Daly, Jon Favreau and Gwyneth Paltrow.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" made its world premiere on June 28th, 2017, followed by the United Kingdom on July 5th and the U.S. on July 7th. It received almost universally positive reviews from critics, who praised the new cast, the film's lighter tone, as well as the visual effects and stunt work.

The film scored $51.2 million at the box-office on Friday, and may end up with $120-125 million for the three-day weekend. That would be the second highest debut for a Spider-Man movie, behind only "Spider-Man 3", which grossed $151 million in 2007.
