box-office-hobbit-battle-five-armies-unbroken-into-the-woods

The Christmas weekend proved to be very merry indeed for three movies. The leader of the pack is still "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" for a second consecutive weekend with $41 million domestically in the last three days and a grand worldwide total of $573 million. In second place we have Angelina Jolie's World War II true story drama "Unbroken" which grossed $47 million in 4 days and close behind at #3 is the fantasy musical "Into the Woods" with $46 million in the same timeframe, a very good start for both films in the upcoming awards season.

The week's other wide release, the remake "The Gambler" starring Mark Wahlberg made a less impressive debut. The film opened in seventh place with $9.3 million over the weekend and $14 million in 4 days. Still, it's not a total disaster for the $25 million movie, especially in the face of such tough competition.

"The Imitation Game" managed to climb into the top 10 after expanding in more theaters and grossed $7.9 million in the last three days. The film will expand further by January 9th.

Tim Burton's "Big Eyes" did not manage to take advantage of the holidays. The biopic scored $3 million from 1,307 theaters and totalled $4.4 million since its release on Christmas day.

New Wide Releases: "Unbroken", "Into the Woods", "The Gambler", "Big Eyes".

Biggest Drop : "The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies (-24%)

Smallest Drop : "Exodus: Gods and Kings" (-16%)
