Weekend Box-Office: THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE Scores Massive $190 Million 5-Day Debut

Weekend Box Office Super Mario Galaxy Movie Drama Great Awakening

The sequel "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" crushed the competition over the Easter weekend with the biggest debut of 2026. However, the new installment underperformed compared to its predecessor. Banking on counter-programming, the psychological romantic dramedy "The Drama" starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson scored a much smaller, but decent debut, while the historical drama "A Great Awakening" also performed well while aiming for the faith-based moviegoers. Overall, this was the fourth-best ever Easter weekend at the box-office. The other three included the releases of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" (2023), "Batman v Superman" (2016), and "Furious 7" (2015).

Illumination's "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" opened in first place with $131.7 million from 4,252 theaters. The film was released on Wednesday, and the 5-day total is $190.8 million. It's massive, sure, but still less than the first film, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie", which in 2023 opened with $146.3 million for the 3-day and $204 million for the 5-day. Still, the sequel is currently the first film of 2026 to cross the $100 million mark in its debut. Internationally it adds another $181.8 million for a worldwide total of $372.6 million. The film cost $110 million to produce, which is significantly less than, for example, a Pixar movie's budget. "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" was not loved by critics (42% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was fairly strong ("A-" CinemaScore).

The sci-fi adventure "Project Hail Mary" finished its third weekend in second place after two consecutive frames at #1. The movie raked in $31.7 million over the weekend, down 41.3% from the previous frame, and has now grossed $218.2 million domestically. With another $203.4 million from overseas theaters, the film's global tally has now reached $421.6 million against a $200 million budget.

A24's "The Drama" made its debut at #3 with $14.3 million from 3,087 theaters. Overseas, the film added another $11.8 million for a global total of $26.2 million. The film cost $28 million to produce, which it may be able to recoup depending on next week's performance. The critics reception was mostly positive (77% on Rotten Tomatoes), while the audiences reception was lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).

In fourth place we find Pixar's "Hoppers" with $5.8 million after a steeper 52% drop, which was undoubtedly caused by the release of the Super Mario movie. The film has now grossed a total of $149.6 million in North America and $182.6 million from foreign markets. The global cume is now at $332.2 million against a $150 milion budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the Colleen Hoover adaptation "Remainders of Him" with $2.2 million, a 53.2% drop from the previous weekend. The film's domestic total is now at $45.3 million, and with another $33.7 million from international markets, the film has now grossed $79 million worldwide against a $25 million budget.

Roadside Attractions' historical drama "A Great Awakening" opened in sixth place with $2 million from 1,289 theaters, which is the studio's best debut for a film released on over 1,000 screens, and their 10th best debut overall, behind "The Conspirator" ($3.5 million), "Judy" ($2.9 million), "Southside With You" ($2.86 million), "A Most Wanted Man" ($2.6 million), "Mr. Holmes" ($2.4 million), "Mud" ($2.2 million), "Run the Race" ($2.16 million), "Ben is Back" ($2.12 million), and "Love & Mercy" ($2.12 million).
