As expected, Christopher Nolan's fantasy epic "The Odyssey" was a massive hit, breaking a series of records as it overwhelmingly dominated the weekend box office. It certainly helped that there were no new releases, since no studio dared go against Nolan, and last week's newly released Disney live-action remake "Moana" continues to sink even lower.

"The Odyssey" opened in first place with $123.5 million from 3,919 theaters, which is both the biggest live-action, and R-rated opening of the year. It's also the fourth-highest R-rated debut, behind all three of the "Deadpool" movies. Overall, it's the third-biggest opening weekend of 2026, behind "Toy Story 5" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie". For Nolan, this is his third highest opening, behind 2008's "The Dark Knight" ($158.4 million) and 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises" ($160.8 million). As for Universal, this is the studio's highest R-rated debut ever. Not bad for a 3-hour sword-and-sandal flick.
Overseas, "The Odyssey" raked in $140.2 million from 73 markets, bringing the worldwide tally to $263.7 million. The film was universally liked by both critics and audiences (94% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore), which will do wonders for word-of-mouth. All eyes are now on the film's sophomore frame, and what kind of drop it will have.
Disney's "Moana" finished its second weekend in second place with $17.9 million, which is a steep 58.4% drop after an already terrible opening weekend. Disney added 325 screens over the weekend, but it didn't seem to help much. The film has now grossed $81 million domestically and another $96.3 million internationally, which adds up to $177.3 million against a massive $250 million budget. The movie needs more than $500 million just to break even.
On the other hand, Disney also has a huge hit on their hands with "Toy Story 5", which finished its fifth weekend in third place, grossing another $13.7 million. That's a soft 27.6% decline, and its domestic total is now at $429.8 million. Overseas it adds another $527.6 million for a global cume of $957.5 million against a budget of $250 million.
Illumination's "Minions & Monsters" isn't the hit previous installments were, but it's doing alright. Now in its third week in theaters, the film dropped to fourth place and added another $13.6 million, which is a decent 35.7% decline. The film has now raked in $136.3 million in North America and another $222 million from foreign markets. The worldwide tally is now at $358.4 million against a modest $85 million budget.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the horror film "Evil Dead Burn" with $4.7 million. The film lost 65.4% in its second weekend, and its domestic total is now at $23.8 million. Internationally it grossed another $27.2 million, which brings the worldwide total to $51 million. Thankfully, the film only cost $20 million to produce, and even with marketing costs, it should already be turning a profit.
