Weekend Box-Office: SONIC Holds at #1 While CALL OF THE WILD Overperforms

New release "The Call of the Wild" was expected to have a modest debut over the weekend, but as it turns out, the film gave "Sonic the Hedgehog" quite a run for its money. In the end, the video game adaptation managed to hold on to the #1 spot at the weekend box-office, while Disney's 20th Century flick came in second. The horror film "Brahms: The Boy II" managed to finish in the Top 5 with an unimpressive opening.

"Birds of Prey" turned out to be a bit of a disappointment at the box-office, as the film underperformed in its opening weekend. Even more surprising since it was the weekend's only new wide release and only had a bunch of holdovers to compete against.

Not surprisingly, "Bad Boys For Life" dominated the Super Bowl weekend and topped the charts for a third consecutive weekend. Meanwhile, new releases "Gretel & Hansel" and "The Rhythm Section" struggled in their opening weekends, with the latter delivering a record worst debut.

BAD BOYS 4 in the Works with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence Slated to Return

Sony tried so hard to sell "Bad Boys for Life" as the last installment of the "Bad Boys" trilogy, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence teaming up for "one last ride". Hell, even the title sounded like a goodbye to fans. But after 16 years trying to get one last movie made, it only took one weekend to greenlight a new sequel.

When the third installment exploded into theaters over the MLK weekend and delivered an incredible $73 million in four days, it became clear that this particular franchise is still lucrative for the studio. And Sony was well aware of this even before seeing the final numbers.

On Friday, news began to circulate that the studio is gearing up for a fourth installment, and that "Bad Boys for Life" scribe Chris Bremner is already on board to pen the script. Bremner is also working on a "National Treasure 3" screenplay for Disney. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing both franchises.

Of course, what's the point of a "Bad Boys" movie without Smith and Lawrence, and they are indeed expected to return. Hopefully, the new sequel won't take 16 years to get made.

Weekend Box-Office: BAD BOYS FOR LIFE Delivers $68M MLK Debut

Sony's "Bad Boys For Life" scored an impressive debut over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, while Universal's family adventure film "Dolittle" performed slightly better than projected, but still ended up flopping.

In Theaters: BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, DOLITTLE and WEATHERING WITH YOU

Two new wide releases will do battle for the top spot at the box-office over the four-day MLK weekend. The first is Sony's "Bad Boys For Life", the long-delayed third installment in the "Bad Boys" franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The film is off to a great start, with surprisingly solid reviews and a record-breaking $6.36 million from Thursday night previews. While Sony expects a $38 million four-day opening weekend from 3,775 theaters, its performance so far suggests something closer to $50 million.

The other new release is Universal's $175 million family adventure film "Dolittle" starring Robert Downey Jr. in his first post-Avengers role. The film, as it turns out, is something of a fiasco. Reviews are mostly negative, and comparable to the studio's awful "Cats", and with just $925,000 from previews, the film is only expected to rake in around $20 million from 4,000 theaters over the extended holiday weekend.

In limited release it might be worth checking out GKids' animated film "Weathering With You", which opens in 450 locations this weekend, and has, so far grossed a total of $180 million worldwide.

The action comedy "Bad Boys for Life" is the third installment in the "Bad Boys" franchise produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The first two films were directed by Michael Bay.

The sequel is directed by "Gangsta" and "Black" helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a script by Chris Bremner, Peter Craig ("The Town", "12 Strong") and Joe Carnahan ("Narc", "The Grey").

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprise the roles of Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett for one last ride. The cast also includes Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, Paula Nunezm, Kate del Castillo, Nicky Jam, Theresa Randle, DJ Khaled and Joe Pantoliano.

"Bad Boys for Life" opened in theaters on January 17, 2020.

This is Stanley's first feature film since his firing from the infamous 1996 flop "The Island of Dr. Moreau".
• The critically acclaimed Netflix drama "The Two Popes" that stars Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, who would later become the current Pope Francis. The film is directed by Fernando Meirelles ("The Constant Gardener", "City of God") from a script by Anthony McCarten ("Darkest Hour").

Bang!") and Galifianakis leads a cast that also includes Will Ferrell, Lauren Lapkus, Jiavani Linayao, Ryan Gaul and Paul Rust, as well as a huge list of celebrity cameos.
• The dark fantasy thriller "Gretel & Hansel" that offers a creepy new twist on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The film hails from horror filmmaker Osgood "Oz" Perkins (son of late "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins), and it stars Sophia Lillis ("It"), Sammy Leakey ("MotherFatherSon"), Alice Krige ("Star Trek: First Contact") and Jessica De Gouw ("Arrow").
