"Shark Night 3D" just opened in theaters, so here's a featurette about the sharks in the movie. The behind-the-scenes clip gives us some insight about the creation of the sharks, the usual combination of animatronics and CGI, some cast and crew interviews, and, of course, some more footage from the movie. "Shark Night 3D" is directed by David R. Ellis ("Final Destination 2", "Snakes on a Plane").

This featurette is an in-depth look into the complex process of bringing the apes in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" to life, using the technology developed by WETA Digital, the visual effects company that worked on "Lord of the Rings", "King Kong" and "Avatar". The results are indeed breathtaking and this could possibly earn WETA another Oscar for their amazing visual effects. And it might be time for Andy Serkis to receive some well deserved recognition during the awards season as well. "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is now in theaters.

So, apparently the trouble the filmmakers had with "Green Lantern" was all about using the green screen for the CGI, because the hero is, well, green. Which explains why Warner Bros. dumped so much money into the movie. Or, at least, it could explain it, 'cause this is but a parody of the bloated superhero movie's production efforts.

Have you been eagerly awaiting to see the Smurf in a movie ? Prepare to be disappointed by "The Smurfs". This mix of animated characters and live action is pretty much like "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and we do remember how that one played out. Director Raja Gosnell has such classics under his belt as "Home Alone 3" and Scooby Doo" 1 & 2. I don't mean to be a grinch here, but this doesn't look very inspiring. Opens July 29 in the US and Canada, quickly followed by Europe throughout August.

A new wave of TV Spots have hit the Internet, featuring a wealth of new footage from the comic book adaptation "Green Lantern", directed by Martin Campbell ("Goldeneye", "Casino Royale", "Vertical Limit"). The movie has had some trouble with the CGI, especially after some harsh fan comments about the visual effects, but they seem to have pulled through nicely. The movie opens on June 17, 2011. Rejoice Tintin fans, the trailer for the Steven Spielberg & Peter Jackson collaboration is here. The animation looks crisp and fluid in a way that even Zemeckis' movies couldn't achieve, although, to be fair, the trailer doesn't give away too many character scenes. But, it's all pretty photorealistic. The animation and effects are handled by WETA Digital, the studio behind the visual effects of "Avatar" and "Lord of the Rings". "The Adventures of Tintin : The Secret of the Unicorn" stars, both in voice and motion capture, Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis (of course), Cary Elwes and Simon Pegg. This also marks the return of film composer John Williams, Spielberg's usual collaborator, after taking quite a break from scoring. The movie opens on December 23, 2011.

As the June 17 release date fastly approaches, Warner Brothers is attempting to smooth over some the "Green Lantern"s rougher edges by adding another 9 million dollars to its visual effects budget, according to Variety, and calling in a third company to handle additional VFX scenes. The already massive budget, which is reported to be somewhere around $200 million, is getting larger, which means the movie is going to have to be extremely efficient at the box-office if Warner Brother is ever going to consider turning this into a movie franchise. Just think how badly the first "Hulk" movie did. It seems Warner is very worried about the quality of the CGI. Initial response from the fans was extremely negative when the first images from the movie surfaced some months ago, which determined the crew to drastically rework the visual effects. The improvement was noticable, especially in the WonderCon footage, but there's probably more work to be done. I'm sure the VFX guys know what they're doing, but from what I've seen, this is a very difficult movie to make, as there are so many crazy sci-fi elements to consider and adapt convincingly.

The teaser trailer for the highly anticipated "Planet of the Apes" prequel is finally here and it looks OK. Just OK. Nothing amazing. It looks a bit like the Will Smith movie "I, Robot" with apes. We also get a bit of plot to go along with the CGI. We see James Franco and Freida Pinto, involved in the experiments that will ultimately create the intelectually enhanced ape known as Caesar (Andy Serkis doing the mocap and voice), who will rise against the cruel human captors and free his monkey friends. Uhm, is it politically correct to say "monkey" ? 'Cause I wouldn't want Caesar coming after me after he reads this. Anyway, it's nice to finally see some actual moving images from the movie, but I find it rather dubious that they would advertise a movie as being made by WETA Digital, the visual effects company for Avatar ? What ever happened to using actors and directors to attract audiences ? Or a decent story for that matter ?

Oh. My. GOD ! It's...It's...It's...a MONKEY !!!! And a CGI one at that. This is the first official look at this year's highly anticipated prequel to "Planet of the Apes" starring James Franco, Freida Pinto, Brian Cox and Andy Serkis (voice & motion-capture), due for release on August 5. Indeed, one can safely argue that the tech involved in the making of this movie far outreaches the classical prosthetic make-up used as far as the 2001 Tim Burton reboot. These will probably be the most realistic talking apes we're ever going to see on the big screen. And Serkis himself is no stranger to the monkey business. He also provided motion capture for Peter Jackson's "King Kong". Now if only they could guarantee that the story and characters will be just as impressive. Still waiting for an actual teaser trailer to form an opinion. So far, they're teasing us with style, not substance. And since when do they think that audiences buy tickets to movies based on just how impressive the technology behind them is. I'll take the old ape costumes anyday, if the story is any good. Which is why, even to this day, the 1968 original still works. They have a lot to live up to.
