Although initially the script for "Star Wars: Episode VII" was written by Michael Arndt ("Toy Story 3", "Little Miss Sunshine"), it has been announced today that director J.J. Abrams and Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan will begin refining the script and preparing it for the finished form that will be used when production begins in Spring 2014. The news came through a press release which also announced the sequel's production team, from visual effects and sound to costumes and cinematography.

"Star Wars: Episode VII" will be released in 2015, but so far Disney has not set an exact date.

Here is the full press release:
"As Episode VII continues pre-production, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams have assumed screenwriting duties for the film. Kasdan, who has been serving as a consultant on the film, is a veteran of several classic Lucasfilm productions, writing the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark and serving as co-screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Acclaimed director and screenwriter Abrams’ credits include Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Fringe, and Lost.

“I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script,” states Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production.”

Location scouting, production design, casting, and costume design are already underway on Episode VII. A team of gifted artists are working to bring the latest installment of the Star Wars saga, including director of photography Dan Mindel (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness), production designers Rick Carter (Lincoln, Avatar, Forrest Gump) and Darren Gilford (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy), costume designer Michael Kaplan (Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Fight Club),special effects supervisor Chris Corbould (Skyfall,The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), sound designer Ben Burtt (Lincoln, Wall-E, Star Wars: Episodes I-VI), re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Mission: Impossible -Ghost Protocol), supervising sound editor Matthew Wood (Star Trek Into Darkness, The Master, There Will Be Blood) of Skywalker Sound, and visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett (Star Trek Into Darkness, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith) of Industrial Light & Magic. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin,War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Shooting is scheduled to begin Spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios for an expected 2015 release."

Plenty of good news for "Star Wars" fans this past week. "Star Wars: Episode VII" executive producer Kathleen Kennedy has been rather generous with the updates during her appearance at Star Wars Celebration Europe. The first important update is that franchise composer John Williams will return to score the sequel. Kennedy stated that "His music just gives me the chills. It's so important for the saga, and we're really excited he's a part of it. Furthermore, Williams appeared in a pre-recorded video in which he spoke about how delighted he was to be returning to the saga. Here is the video:



Kathleen Kennedy also went on to discuss elements of the "Star Wars: Episode VII" production. She revealed that she is involved in extensive story meetings with director J.J. Abrams and the writers, including Lawrence Kasdan ("Empire Strikes Back"), and that the emphasis will be on story and characters, not visual effects. And as far as CGI goes, Kennedy stated that they will work hard to mix CG with practical effects and real locations.
"The story and characters are all we’re talking about right now. We have an amazing team at ILM, who can create fantastic effects, but if we don’t have a great story and characters, the effects mean nothing. I do think making huge popular culture – and I’ve had the good fortune to be a part of a lot it – is really hard to do and get right. And if you don’t spend the time you need on developing characters, and finding stories, complicated stories, the audience gets tired because they think they’re seeing the same thing again and again.

There's nothing more exciting than to be involved in that kind of technological innovation. When the story ideas you're working on contribute to pushing the technology, I really think that's what's so exciting about our business. It's when the imagination drives innovation and new design.

It's a conversation we're having all the time in the development of Episode VII. Looking at all the Star Wars movies and getting a feel for what even some of the early films did, combining real locations and special effects – that's something we're looking very seriously at. So we're going to find some very cool locations that we're going to use in support of Episode VII and I think we're probably going to end up using every single tool in the toolbox to create the look of these movies.

[Reffering to what is in the "toolbox"] It's using model makers; it's using real droids; it's taking advantage of artwork that you actually can touch and feel. And we want to do that in combination with CG effects. We figure that's what will make it real."

Good news "Star Wars" fans. It has been confirmed today, by Disney CEO Bob Iger, that they will indeed make several spinoff films based on characters from the franchise which will be released alongside the new trilogy that J.J. Abrams is working on. Screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan ("The Empire Strikes Back") and Simon Kinberg ("Sherlock Holmes") will be handling the stories of the spinoff installments and two of these stories will apparently focus on Boba Fett and a young Han Solo, and will take place, for the most part, within the timeline of the original trilogy:
"I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too."

"The spinoff projects currently in development are a young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum."

Director J.J. Abrams was rumored for some time as being courted to direct "Star Wars: Episode VII" but Abrams himself initially turned down the offer made by producer Kathleen Kennedy. Now, it seems that the "Star Trek" director has decided to jump on board of another Star-titled franchise. J.J. Abrams is currently finishing up "Star Trek Into Darkness" and has no other projects to which he may be attached to direct, so the "Star Wars" sequel should fit in his schedule. The seventh episode will be written by Michael Arndt ("Little Miss Sunshine"). Also, it is rumored that Lawrence Kasdan, who also wrote the script for "The Empire Strikes Back", will collaborate with Simon Kinberg ("Sherlock Holmes") on screenplays for future sequels and/or spinoff movies from the "Star Wars" franchise.

UPDATE: Disney has officially announced that J.J. Abrams will direct, and produce, "Star Wars: Episode VII". Also, George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy both stated that they are very impressed with Abrams' career and consider him the perfect choice to helm the franchise. The official press release below also mentions that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will be consulting on the "Episode VII" project. Here is the official press release:
"J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”

“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe."

After screenwriter Michael Arndt was confirmed as the new writer for "Star Wars: Episode VII", Disney announced this week that "Empire Strikes Back" writer Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg ("Sherlock Holmes", "X-Men: First Class" and its sequel) have been hired to write Episodes VIII and IX. It remains to be seen who will write which episode.


The official synopsis for the "Ender's Game" adaptation has been released. The film, based on Orson Scott Card's classic book, is directed by Gavin Hood ("Tsotsi", "X-Men Origins: Wolverine") and stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Sir Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis and Abigail Breslin. Here is the synopsis:
"In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite.

Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham, himself, to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race."

New release dates announced this week:
  • "All You Need is Kill" - sci-fi actioner starring Tom Cruise will be released on March 7, 2014
  • "Insidious Chapter 2" - Directed by James Wan, written by Leigh Whannell and starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye and Ty Simpkins, will be released on August 30, 2013
  • "Paranormal Activity 5" - October 25, 2013
  • "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" - 3D re-release on September 20, 2013
  • "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" - 3D re-release on October 4, 2013

In a bit of surprising new, 20th Century Fox announced that it will not be releasing the 3D version of "Independence Day". Initially, the 3D re-release was supposed to happen on July 3, 2013, but it seems that Fox has had a change of heart.
