Simon Kinberg To Write And Produce New Star Wars Trilogy

Simon Kinberg, the writer of "X-Men: Days of Future Past", "First Class" and "Sherlock Holmes", has been brought on board to write and produce Lucasfilm's new "Star Wars" trilogy. This will be a new series with new characters set after "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker". Plot details haven't been revealed, but Lucasfilm has acknowledged that Kinberg's movies will continue the story that George Lucas began with 1977's "A New Hope".

Kinberg previously worked with Lucasfilm on the Disney Channel animated series "Star Wars: Rebels", which he co-created with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, and he consulted with director J.J. Abrams on 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". According to sources, Kinberg's trilogy remains in early development, and it's unclear when it will begin production. Meanwhile, the filmmaker is serving as a producer on Paramount and Edgar Wright's "The Running Man" remake starring Glen Powell and Josh Brolin. He's also attached as a producer on Paramount's next "Star Trek" movie from director Toby Haynes.

Disney and Jon Favreau will release "The Mandalorian & Grogu" starring Pedro Pascal, on May 22, 2026, along with two untitled "Star Wars" movies set for December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027. James Mangold Picture
Boba Fett Image

As "Solo: A Star Wars Story" rolled into theaters today, a report by the Hollywood Reporter reveals that "Logan" and "Walk the Line" helmer James Mangold is set to write and direct an upcoming "Star Wars" spinoff movie that will focus on bounty hunter Boba Fett. The screenplay is rumored to be written by Simon Kinberg ("The Martian", "X-Men: Days of Future Past"). Along with "Solo", the film will be a part of the studio's lineup of "Star Wars" origin stories that will also include an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, which might be directed by Stephen Daldry ("The Hours").

Boba Fett was introduced in the original trilogy's "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi". The character was a notorious Mandalorian bounty hunter who worked for the Empire and Jabba the Hutt and was hired to capture Han Solo. A first attempt at exploring his origin story was made in 2002's "Attack of the Clones". British actor Jeremy Bulloch played Fett in the classic films.

Mangold is also set to direct Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the biopic "Ford vs Ferrari", and will also helm the drama "Crenshaw" based on Katherine Applegate's novel of the same name.

Jessica Chastain Photo

This year's Cannes film festival brings some interesting news. It seems that Jessica Chastain has assembled an ensemble cast of actresses who will join her on the Croisette to promote an upcoming project that will be directed by "The Martian" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" writer Simon Kinberg.

The film is titled "355", which as Chastain explained in an interview is CIA slang for female spy (read the excerpt below), and will be a grounded, edgy action thriller that aims to alter a male-dominated genre with a true female ensemble. The all-star international cast also includes Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Fan Bingbing and Lupita Nyong'o. The screenplay is written by Theresa Rebeck.

Kinberg and the cast will begin pitching their vision to international buyers at the Majestic Hotel on the Croisette.

To learn more about the project here are some excerpts from Chastain's interview:
"I had so much fun working on The Help that I always wanted to do another female ensemble film. I love the Bourne movies, the Mission: Impossible films, and wondered why, except for Charlie’s Angels, there hadn’t been a true female ensemble action-thriller spy film. That got my wheels going, along with the idea of casting actresses from all over the world to truly make it an international project. I realized the incredible creative freedom we would have with that. I brought the idea to Simon, told him about the actresses I was thinking of, and he was so sweet. He said, ‘I want to do it with you.

Then I called all the women, told them what I was envisioning and that I wanted it to be a collaborative process, and how we would all create this together. The one thing that felt important is that we all show up at Cannes, because that would be the beginning of our journey together. Every single actress I called said yes, on the phone call. They committed to Cannes and to everything. So far it has been a very wonderfully easy process.

When I was preparing for Zero Dark Thirty, I had incredible resources working in the CIA I got to learn from. We have a consultant in our film that has a lot of knowledge in espionage. This title came from one of the conversations I had with him. Agent 355 was the code name of a female spy during the American Revolution. She was one of the very first spies for the United States, and her identity is still unknown. For a lot of women who work in the CIA and other organizations like that, Code 355 is a universal slang term for female spy. It’s the invisible woman who was never named."

The Leviathan Concept Trailer Ruairi Robinson

Writer Simon Kinberg ("X-Men: Days of Future Past") and director/writer Neill Blomkamp ("District 9") have joined forces with Ruairi Robinson ("The Last Days on Mars") to turn the sci-fi project "The Leviathan" into a full-length feature film. The script will be written by Jim Uhls ("Fight Club"). Kinberg and Blomkamp previously collaborated on "Chappie" and "Elysium", and the latter is currently working on "Alien 5".

This all started with a proof-of-concept trailer called "The Leviathan" which was released about a week ago. The video was a huge hit online, gathering close to 2 million views on YouTube and Vimeo. Taking place sometime in the 22nd century, when mankind has colonized alien worlds, space travel has become possible by harvesting exotic matter from the eggs of a gigantic species that is now hunted for these specific industrial purposes. Those who take part in the hunt are considered involuntary labor due to the hazardous nature of their work. It's an incredible proof-of-concept video with impeccable production values, and you can watch it below:

Rose Byrne ("Insidious") starred in Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class" as CIA agent Moira MacTaggert, and now the actress is set to reprise the role in Bryan Singer's upcoming sequel "X-Men: Apocalypse". The character was not a part of "Days of Future Past", but it seems she will play a major role in the new film, according to screenwriter Simon Kinberg:
"She’s a significant character in the movie. We ended First Class with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them… It’s certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class, and would like to mine more in this one."
Apocalypse will be set in the 1980s and the cast also fetures James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp. "X-Men: Apocalypse" will open in theaters on May 27, 2016.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool
Ever since Ryan Reynolds starred as Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", there have been constant rumors of a spinoff film featuring Reynolds as the "Merc with a Mouth". Years have passed and no Deadpool movie. But now, it seems like it's all finally coming together.

Ryan Reynolds is still on board to lead the film and 20th Century Fox has already set the release date. "Deadpool" opens in theaters on February 12, 2016. There are also rumors that the budget is set at around $50 million, although I'm sure it's far too early for any definitive numbers. Furthermore, the spinoff will be a part of the X-Men universe according to writer/producer Simon Kinberg:
"There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now,” Kinberg explained, “and Deadpool obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it’s part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox."
However, one big issue for the movie is the fact that Deadpool tends to break the fourth wall often, which is very funny in the comics, but I'm not sure how that will work out in the context of the ultra-serious X-Men films. Deadpool is completely in a league of his own, so the filmmakers will have quite a challenge on their hands. And for everyone expecting this to be R-rated (because it should be), it's not. It's going to be PG-13. Definitely not like in the test footage that was leaked earlier this year (watch below).

Harrison Ford as Han Solo
Boba Fett Bounty Hunter

Good news "Star Wars" fans. It has been confirmed today, by Disney CEO Bob Iger, that they will indeed make several spinoff films based on characters from the franchise which will be released alongside the new trilogy that J.J. Abrams is working on. Screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan ("The Empire Strikes Back") and Simon Kinberg ("Sherlock Holmes") will be handling the stories of the spinoff installments and two of these stories will apparently focus on Boba Fett and a young Han Solo, and will take place, for the most part, within the timeline of the original trilogy:
"I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too."

"The spinoff projects currently in development are a young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum."

Director J.J. Abrams was rumored for some time as being courted to direct "Star Wars: Episode VII" but Abrams himself initially turned down the offer made by producer Kathleen Kennedy. Now, it seems that the "Star Trek" director has decided to jump on board of another Star-titled franchise. J.J. Abrams is currently finishing up "Star Trek Into Darkness" and has no other projects to which he may be attached to direct, so the "Star Wars" sequel should fit in his schedule. The seventh episode will be written by Michael Arndt ("Little Miss Sunshine"). Also, it is rumored that Lawrence Kasdan, who also wrote the script for "The Empire Strikes Back", will collaborate with Simon Kinberg ("Sherlock Holmes") on screenplays for future sequels and/or spinoff movies from the "Star Wars" franchise.

UPDATE: Disney has officially announced that J.J. Abrams will direct, and produce, "Star Wars: Episode VII". Also, George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy both stated that they are very impressed with Abrams' career and consider him the perfect choice to helm the franchise. The official press release below also mentions that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will be consulting on the "Episode VII" project. Here is the official press release:
"J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”

“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe."
