Christian Bale Joins Leonardo Dicaprio In Heat 2

Director Michael Mann's sequel "Heat 2" is moving forward, and it is already drawing strong interest from top talent. It has been previously reported that Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to join the cast of Mann's follow-up to the classic 1995 crime drama that starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. And now, it seems that Christian Bale is circling a major role. DiCaprio and Bale's roles are unknown at this time.

The film is being developed for Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, and production is expected to begin next year for a 2027 release. Mann wrote the script based on his own 2022 bestseller co-authored with Meg Gardiner, which follows Val Kilmer's character Chris Shiherlis as he flees the LAPD and Lt. Vincent Hanna (Pacino) after the failed bank robbery from the original film. The story is both a sequel and a prequel that moves through multiple locations in North America, South America and Southeast Asia.

The second storyline is set in 1988 Chicago, and it follows McCauley, Shiherlis and their high-line crew as they execute scores on the West Coast, the U.S.-Mexico border and in the Windy City. At the same time, Hanna is cutting his teeth as a rising star in the Chicago Police Department chasing an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.

Mann, Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, Nick Nesbitt will produce the film, while executive producers include Shane Salerno and Eric Roth. The film's budget is estimated at $150 million, and is also slated to receive $37.2 million in California tax credits, with a 77-day shoot planned in Los Angeles in 2026.

The sequel was originally set up at Warner Bros, but after a budgetary dispute, the studio exited the project in August 2025. In October 2025, Amazon MGM Studios' United Artists label beat out studios including Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures for rights to the project.

Mann had this to say about the film's budget: "Heat 2’ is an expensive movie to make, but I believe it should be made at the proper size and scale. It's going to shoot in Chicago, Los Angeles and Paraguay, and possibly some parts of Singapore. People make dramas at a certain budget level, because of the costs, not because of anybody being greedy. If it was at a lower price, I could have made it anywhere. But it's complex. I can't get into all the politics of it".

  • Bad news for fans of Jack Bauer, the "24" movie is not going to get made this year. Fox announced that the production for what is intended to become a trilogy will be put on hold until budget issues can be resolved. Apparently Kiefer Sutherland and producer Brian Grazer were aiming for a $40M budget, while Fox is thinking of something around $30M. A spokesman for the studio had this to say : "We're still working on a script, and hope to make [it] when Kiefer next has time. But this all came down to timing, and seven weeks is not enough time to prep a movie like this" The movie has yet to secure a director. The script was written by Billy Ray ("State of Play") and Mark Bomback ("Unstoppable").

  • The "Robocop" reboot is doing much better, though. The update of the classic sci-fi actioner now has a complete roster after director Jose Padilha ("Elite Squad") picked Joel Kinnaman ("The Killing") for the lead role. Not only that, but the reboot has been given an official release date : August 9, 2013. Although the production start has not yet been announced, it's clear that the studio feels that it can safely pick a deadline. The screenplay was written by Josh Zetumer and Nick Schenk ("Gran Torino")

  • A release date has also been set for "Anna Karenina", the latest adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel, directed by Joe Wright ("Atonement") and starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law. The movie will open on September 7, 2012 in the UK and on November 9, 2012 in the US.

  • The HBO TV Series "Luck", produced by Michael Mann ("Heat") and David Milch, was cancelled today after a third horse died at the end of the production for Season one. All three horses suffered crippling accidents, leaving veterinarians no other choice than to euthanise them.  Starring Dustin HoffmanNick Nolte and Dennis Farina, the series was renewed for a second season by HBO before the final decision to pull the plug. I guess they should have called it "No Luck".

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger
can't get enough of big-screen comeback offers. The actor is set to join directors Mike McCoy & Scott Waugh ("Act of Valor") on their upcoming fantasy actioner called "Unknown Soldier". The script is written by Skip Woods ("Swordfish"), Sergio Altieri and Kevin Elders ("Iron Eagle"). The movie should begin production in June. Schwarzenegger is also signed on to star alongside Sylvester Stallone in "The Tomb" and he has already completed work on "The Last Stand" which will be released on January 18, 2013.
