memorial-day-weekend-box-office-tomorrowland-poltergeist

There were certainly high hopes for Disney's "Tomorrowland", but all of them have now faded as the $190 million blockbuster scored a minor debut which barely topped the box office during a Memorial Day weekend that proved surprisingly slow. The horror remake "Poltergeist" made a decent debut, while "Pitch Perfect 2" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" continue to impress.

in-theaters-tomorrowland-poltergeist-when-marnie-was-there-aloft

The weekend will easily be dominated by Disney's sci-fi adventure "Tomorrowland" starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson, although reviews haven't been great. Another wide release this week is the "Poltergeist" remake produced by Sam Raimi. I personally feel that the classic horror film did not need updating, especially since every modern haunted house film either rips off or honors the original. The most notable limited releases of the week are Hiromasa Yonebayashi's animated feature "When Marnie Was There" and the drama "Aloft" starring Jennifer Connelly. More about each movie after the jump.

Synopses, details, critical reception, trailers, clips and more after the jump.

Poltergeist Remake Clips

Four new clips have been released for the "Poltergeist" remake produced by Sam Raimi ("Evil Dead"). The film is now in theaters, and as I expected, it's been getting quite a beating from critics and audiences alike. The most common complaint is that it brings nothing new and is yet another pointless remake. The film stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, Saxon Sharbino, Jane Adams, Kyle Catlett and Kennedi Clements.

New trailer, featurette and poster for the Poltergeist remake

Today we have the second trailer, as well as a new featurette and poster for the "Poltergeist" remake. Produced by Sam Raimi ("Evil Dead") and directed by Gil Kenan ("Monster House"), the film looks like it follows the original closely while adding present-day elements to it. It definitely feels scary, but trailers have a habit of being better than the movie itself, so I can only be sure after I've watched the full picture. I can't imagine why the remake was necessary, especially given how many haunted house films have been released recently that have already drawn inspiration to some degree from the original "Poltergeist". The remake stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, Saxon Sharbino, Jane Adams, Kyle Catlett and Kennedi Clements.

"Poltergeist" opens in theaters on May 22nd (2D and 3D).

Poltergeist Remake Trailer and Poster

The first trailers and poster for the "Poltergeist" remake have been released. We have a teaser trailer in two versions, domestic and international. The international trailer is the better version, with much better editing and a little more subtle in its presentation. The movie, produced by Sam Raimi ("Evil Dead") and directed by Gil Kenan ("Monster House"), looks to be faithful enough to the original while also adding appropriately modern elements to the story. It will definitely have better visuals, but I also fear that it might borrow too much from the recent "Paranormal Activity" craze. Thank God they didn't think of remaking it as a found-footage flick. The remake stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, Saxon Sharbino, Jane Adams, Kyle Catlett and Kennedi Clements.

"Poltergeist" opens in theaters on July 24th.

Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez will star in the drama "The Boy Next Door" as a "newly-separated mother who begins an affair with a new teenage neighbor who befriends her son. Trouble ensues, however, when she tries to abruptly end the relationship." Rob Cohen ("The Fast and the Furious") is in talks to direct the small-budget film. Jason Blum ("The Purge", "The Reader", "Insidious") will produce the film and Barbara Curry has written the script. Production is set to begin this fall.

Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts is in talks to star in the thriller "Holland, Michigan". The film is the directorial debut of Oscar-winning documentarian Errol Morris. The story, which has been described as Fargo-esque, focuses on "a woman who suspects her husband is cheating. She begins an affair of her own, eventually discovering that her husband is a serial killer." Naomi Watts can also be seen in the upcoming Princess Diana biopic "Diana" and "Vincent De Van Nuys" with Bill Murray.

Emma Watson
Emma Watson ("The Perks of Being a Wallflower") has joined the cast of "Your Voice in My Head", an adaptation of Emma Forrest's memoir and the story of "a young bipolar English woman living in New York and the heroic, selfless psychiatrist who saves her life while fighting for his own". Watson was first signed on to star in the project by director David Yates ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", but when the director dropped out, the young actress was replaced by Emily Blunt. An official announcement by the studio has confirmed that Emma Watson has been brought back for the lead role. "Your Voice in My Head" is directed by Francesca Gregorini ("Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes"). Production will begin on November 4th.

Jared Harris
Jared Harris ("Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows") will star in the "Poltergeist" remake directed by Gil Kenan ("Monster House"). Harris will star as "Carrigan, a larger than life TV personality who left the world of academia behind to become the star host of basic cable TV show Haunted House Cleaners.". Rosemarie DeWitt ("United States of Tara") was cast in a lead role and Sam Rockwell is rumored for a supporting role. The remake is produced by Sam Raimi ("Evil Dead") and penned by David Lindsay-Abaire ("Oz the Great and Powerful"). The film will be released in 2014.

Dane DeHaan
Robert Pattinson

Dane DeHaan ("Chronicle") and Robert Pattinson ("The Twilight Saga") will star as James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock, respectively, in the drama "Life". The film is written and directed by Luke Davies ("Candy") and will focus on the friendship between Dean and Stock that ensued "when the straight-laced Stock embarked on a road trip with Dean in 1955 for a Life magazine commission." Production is set to begin in Canada on February 2014.

Tom Hiddleston
Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers") has replaced Benedict Cumberbatch in Guillermo del Toro's haunted house horror "Crimson Peak". The director has previously declared that his film is a "classical gothic romance ghost story" and a "very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story." "Crimson Peak" also stars Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam. Production is expected to begin in January 2014.

World War Z Banner

Despite all the behind-the-scenes drama involving rewrites, reshoots and budget issues, "World War Z" turned out to be a box-office hit. The Brad Pitt starrer grossed $66M domestically and an additional $45 million from outside the US. It's no surprise that Paramount is now considering a sequel. The film was already designed as a multi-installment franchise, considering Pitt's character utters the line "This isn’t the end; not even close." in the film's final scenes. According to Movies.com, the way the film originally ended before the rewrites was even more sequel-oriented than the current ending and even included a larger part for Matthew Fox. As for what the sequel's story might be, Pitt himself said when asked about a follow-up movie: "There is enough material to mine from the book for a sequel. We could barely get a fraction of the book in this movie. So we’ll see." Stay tuned for more information as it arrives.

Arnold Schwarzenegger
And speaking of zombies, Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to star in the zombie apocalypse movie "Maggie". He will play a father whose daughter has been infected and is slowly becoming one of the undead. At one point Chloe Grace Moretz was attached to star as the daughter, but she dropped out of the project. The film will be directed by Henry Hobson, who has mainly done title design work for "The Walking Dead" and "The Lone Ranger" among others, and the script is written by John Scott. Production begins this fall.

Jurassic Park Image

Some "Jurassic Park 4" plot details have surfaced. Although it's very early to be 100% sure this will be the movie's storyline, JoBlo reports that the sequel will involve a fully functional dinosaur theme park set on Isla Nublar:
"JURASSIC PARK 4, set in present day Isla Nublar, is now an actual theme park, as originally intended by John Hammond in the first film. It garners 10 million visitors per year and is completely safe – until it’s not. The park itself is described as very Sea World-esque and includes an area called the Isla Nublar Lagoon. That means underwater dino’s for the first time. No indication of what kind, but there’s concept art showing one of the aquatic dino’s, as part of a show, jumping out of the lagoon and eating a strung up great white shark like it was a fish for a dolphin at sea world."
"Jurassic Park 4" will be directed by Colin Trevorrow ("Safet Not Guaranteed") and the script is written by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes"). The release date was supposed to be June 13, 2014, but Universal has announced that it would delay production until everyone was certain they could deliver the ultimate epic Jurassic Park experience. Variety also reported that Bryce Dallas Howard and David Oyelowo may be in talks for the lead roles.
"In coordination with filmmakers, Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a later date giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal’s beloved franchise. We could not be more excited about the vision that Colin Trevorrow has created for this film, and we look forward to watching as he and the producers create another great chapter in this franchise’s storied history."
Poltergeist Image

The "Poltergeist" remake is also moving forward. The film will shoot this fall and will be co-financed by MGM and Fox 2000. Gil Kenan ("Monster House") is set to direct from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, David Lindsay-Abaire ("Oz: The Great and Powerful"). The remake is produced by Sam Raimi ("Evil Dead", "Spider-Man") and will probably be released in 2014. Here is the official plot synopsis:
"In a revisionist take on the classic horror film, a family struggling to make ends meet relocates to an outdated suburban home and is confronted by an angry spirit who kidnaps their youngest daughter and challenges them to band together to rescue her from the clutches of evil."
Cameron Diaz Picture

Cameron Diaz will return as materialistic foul-mouthed teacher Elizabeth Halsey in the sequel "Bad Teacher 2". Sony greenlit the new installment with Jake Kasdan returning to direct from a script by newcomer Justin Malen. The first film was a worldwide hit grossing $216M. Diaz has not officially signed for the sequel, but since the project is built around her, it's only a matter of time. Until then, there is also a "Bad Teacher" sitcom developed for CBS which will air next year with Ari Graynor playing the Diaz role.
