New on DVD and Blu-ray: April 11, 2017

The new DVD and Blu-ray releases for the week of April 11, 2017 include the Oscar nominated biopics "Lion" and "Hidden Figures", the sci-fi adventure film "Monster Trucks", the crime comedy "War on Everyone", the horror film "The Bye Bye Man", the western "Brimstone" and the Foreign Film Oscar nominee "Toni Erdmann". James Franco fans might be interested in the Blu-ray release of the 2006 film "Tristan + Isolde".

We also have three new series released this week on home video, HBO's "Silicon Valley" (Season 3) and "Veep" (Season 5), and National Geographic's intriguing miniseries "Mars".

There are also a decent number of oldies-but-goldies, mostly released as remastered Blu-ray editions. Among them, the most notable are the Criterion Collection's "The Young Girls of Rochefort" and "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg", the horror films "Dark Waters", "House: Two Stories", and the collections featuring films in the "Phantasm" series and the "Dead or Alive" trilogy.

2017 SAG Awards Winners Include HIDDEN FIGURES, STRANGER THINGS and More

The winners of the 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced. The big winner in the feature film categories was "Hidden Figures", which won Outstanding Performance by a Cast. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis won for their Leading and Supporting roles in "Fences", while "La La Land" walked away with only one award for leading actress Emma Stone. For television, the winners include "Stranger Things", "The Crown", "All the Way" and "The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story".

Weekend Box-Office: SPLIT Dominates Against A DOG'S PURPOSE and RESIDENT EVIL 6

For a second consecutive weekend, "Split" dominated the box-office and held back newcomers that included the canine dramedy "A Dog's Purpose" and the sequel "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter".

Weekend Box-Office: HIDDEN FIGURES Conquers MLK Weekend While ROGUE ONE Reaches $500 Million

The Martin Luther King weekend might not have been great for new releases, but most of the old limited releases that went nationwide, "Hidden Figures", "La La Land" and "Patriots Day" made solid money. Meanwhile, "Rogue One" finally reached and is primed to cross the $500 million mark.

New Soundtracks: UNDERWORLD BLOOD WARS, HIDDEN FIGURES, THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE and More

The new soundtrack releases for the week of January 2-8, 2017 include Michael Wandmacher's score for "Underworld: Blood Wars", the music from "Hidden Figures" composed by Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams and Benjamin Wallfisch, Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans' music from "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" and the soundtrack from the eight part drama series "The Halcyon". Other notable releases include "Dalida" (Various Artists), "A Street Cat Named Bob" (David Hirschfelder) and "The Bye Bye Man" (The Newton Brothers).

Weekend Box-Office: ROGUE ONE Edges HIDDEN FIGURES

The first weekend of 2017 kicked off with a very tight race between Disney's behemoth "Rogue One" and the biopic "Hidden Figures", which just expanded into wide release this week. Meanwhile new release "Underworld: Blood Wars" scored a low point for the franchise, and the fantasy drama "A Monster Calls" failed to make the Top 10 for its wide release.

In Theaters: UNDERWORLD BLOOD WARS, A MONSTER CALLS, HIDDEN FIGURES, RAILROAD TIGERS

This week in theaters we have two new wide releases, the action sequel "Underworld: Blood Wars" starring Kate Beckinsale and the fantasy drama "A Monster Calls". Also, the Oscar hopeful biopic "Hidden Figures" expands nationwide this weekend. In limited release, Jackie Chan fans should check out the action comedy "Railroad Tigers".

HIDDEN FIGURES Clips, Featurettes, Images and Posters

The biopic "Hidden Figures" tells the true story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), three brilliant African American women who served as the brains behind NASA's historical launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a landmark achievement that pushed the Space Race forward.

Co-written and directed by Theodore Melfi ("St. Vincent "), the film also stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge, Glen Powell and Jim Parsons.

The film has received two Golden Globe nominations for Supporting Actress (Spencer) and Original Score (Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams).

"Hidden Figures" opens in theaters nationwide on January 6th.

2017 SAG Awards Nominations Announced

The Screen Actors Guild have announced the nominations for the 2017 awards, and it's mostly the usual suspects, with a few surprises. Among the "usual suspects" I would count "Fences", "Moonlight", "La La Land" and "Manchester by the Sea".

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the inclusion of the indie dramedy "Captain Fantastic", which received nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Cast and Male Actor (Viggo Mortensen). The film received excellent reviews, but was largely ignored by pundits. Not the case anymore. It has just become a serious contender.

One other surprise is that "Hidden Figures" similarly received nods for its cast and Octavia Spencer's supporting turn. Now, we don't know much about this film, other than the fact that it looks like your typical Oscar bait biopic. Early reviews are mixed to positive and seem to support my assessment. It may be that the film is riding the political wave in these troubled and racially charged times.

Another unexpected nomination was that of Emily Blunt for her role in "Girl on the Train", a film that generated a lackluster response from critics, but performed well at the box-office. Could be that the SAG is trying to stay popular.

And the more negative surprise is that Martin Scorsese's "Silence" has been snubbed, following the shut out of the Golden Globe nominations. It seems that the period drama is about to become this awards season's biggest disappointment.

The TV shows nominated at the SAG Awards include "Stranger Things", "Orange Is the New Black", "Modern Family", "Grace & Frankie", "Game of Thrones", "Westworld" and "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story".

The winners will be announced during a ceremony that will be simultaneously broadcast live on TNT and TBS on January 29th at 8pm.

The new soundtrack releases for the week of December 9th include the scores for "Collateral Beauty" by Theodore Shapiro, "Westworld Season 1" by Ramin Djawadi, the album and score for "La La Land", the "Various Artists" albums for "Office Christmas Party", "Hidden Figures", "Mozart in the Jungle Season 3" and "Sing", and Max Richter's original score for "Miss Sloane".

"Hidden Figures" is a biopic that tells the untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. "Hidden Figures" opens in theaters on December 25th.
