Melanie Laurent Picture

"Inglourious Basterds" and "6 Underground" star Melanie Laurent has signed on to star in the upcoming biopic "Rosa Bonheur" directed by Fabienne Berthaud ("A Bigger World", "Lily Sometimes"). The film is being produced by Carole Scotta, Barbara Letellier and Caroline Benjo at Haut et Court, the company behind "Coco Before Chanel" and "The Night of the 12th" .

The film chronicles the life of Rosa Bonheur, a trailblazing feminist and artist who rose to fame in 19th century France. Laurent will star in the titular role in Berthaud's film which has been described as a "sprawling period movie". The film will also chronicle Bonheur's world acclaim, including in the U.S. where she befriended William Frederick Cody, aka Buffalo Bill. Bonheur's most iconic work, "The Horse Fair", which is a 16-foot canvas unveiled in 1853, is currently hanging at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Filming will take place on location in Bonheur's well-preserved atelier at her Château de By in Thomery, where she worked and lived for over 40 years, alongside her partner Nathalie Micas and later with Anna Klumpke, an American painter. The crew includes Nathalie Durand, the cinematographer of Xavier Legrand's Venice prize-winning "Custody". The film will shoot in French with some English dialogue.

Berthaud is working closely with Katherine Brault, who bought the Chateau de By in 2017 and transformed it into a museum. Across the chateau and its attics, Brault uncovered hundreds of letters, works of art, objects and documents that have stayed intact for over a century and will be used by Berthaud for the movie.

Melanie Laurent, Alexandre Aja, Vincent Maraval Team for Netflix Survival Thriller O2
"Melanie Laurent" ("6 Underground") is set to lead the cast of the upcoming Netflix survival thriller "O2". This will be director Alexandre Aja's ("Crawl", "The Hills Have Eyes") first French-language film after a 15-year career in the U.S. The screenplay, which was on the Black List, is penned by Christie LeBlanc.

The film tells the story of a young woman who wakes up in a medical cryo unit. She doesn’t remember who she is or how she ended up sequestered in a box no larger than a coffin. As she’s running out of oxygen, she must rebuild her memory to find a way out of her nightmare. Mathieu Amalric ("The French Dispatch") and Malik Zidi ("Play") will also star.

The project originally had Noomi Rapace attached to star (Anne Hathaway was previously in the mix for the lead role) for director Franck Khalfoun and with Aja producing.

Production is currently in progress. Aja will produce alongside his longtime collaborator Gregory Levasseur. The film is executive produced by Adam Riback and James Engle for Echo Lake Entertainment. "O2" will be released on Netflix mid 2021.

This is the first notable project from Getaway Films, the production company set up last year by Wild Bunch co-founders Vincent Maraval and Brahim Chioua, together with Noëmie Devide, to produce mainly French genre titles for Wild Bunch to sell.

Here's what Aja had to say about the project:
"After a period spent in lockdown, a project which in its core explores confinement and claustrophobia was a no-brainer, almost a necessity. I am very enthusiastic to collaborate with Wild Bunch and Melanie Laurent and to begin a beautiful creative adventure with Netflix".

my-son-2017-new-on-dvd-and-bluray

Product Description: In the middle of the night, a 7-year-old boy has gone missing. The crisis has drawn the child's father Julien (Guillaume Canet) back to a small, snowy town in eastern France in an effort to help. Julien travels abroad for work and has been essentially absent from his son's life since splitting with his wife (Mélanie Laurent) a few years earlier. Fueled by his sense of guilt about neglecting his family, Julien is determined to do whatever it takes to and his son. My Son marks the third and most unique collaboration between Canet and director Christian Carion, whose 2005 war drama Joyeux Noël earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Here, in a remarkable filmmaking twist, Carion made the decision to keep Canet almost completely in the dark about the movie's plot. The film was shot in sequence over a quick six days. And Canet, onscreen for virtually every minute, was experiencing events, struggling with his emotions, and discovering clues in real time, just as his character was. The result is a dynamic thriller with an added layer of authentic tension.

Aloft Movie Trailer and Clips

The drama "Aloft" has begun its limited run in theaters in the U.S., so here is a trailer and six clips for the film. Directed by Claudia Llosa, the film stars Jennifer Connelly as a struggling mother who encounters the son she abandoned 20 years earlier. This is Llosa’s English language debut following her Golden Bear winning and Oscar nominated film "Milk of Sorrow". The critical reception, however, hasn't been very warm. The general consesus seems to be that the talented cast is buried under the film's brooding atmosphere and narrative issues. "Aloft" also stars Cillian Murphy, Mélanie Laurent, Oona Chaplin and William Shimell.
