jake-gyllenhaal-hugh-jackman-prisoners

The R-rated kidnapping drama "Prisoners" starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal was the #1 movie of the weekend and overpowered its competition by grossing $21 million in three days. The film is the US debut of Academy Award-nominated director Denis Villeneuve ("Incendies") and it is one of 2013's Oscar hopefuls. Meanwhile, the dance flick "Battle of the Year" starring Lost's Josh Holloway grossed a poor $5 million, placing fifth at the box-office. The IMAX/3D re-release of "The Wizard of Oz" grossed $3 million and placed 9th. Although not part of the top 10, Ron Howard's racing drama "Rush" underperformed, grossing $40,000 from five theaters in its limited release. The film will get its wide release next Friday.

More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.

wizard-of-oz-imax-3d

The first trailer and poster for the 75th Anniversary IMAX 3D re-release of "The Wizard of Oz" have been released. L. Frank Baum's classic tale will look awesome on an IMAX screen, but I think the idea of turning a classic into 3D is a bit over-the-top. The re-release will debut in theaters on September 20, 2013, followed by a five-disc Blu-Ray release on October 1st.

Oz the Great and Powerful

"Oz the Great and Powerful" is currently enjoying a very successful theatrical run, but that hasn't stopped Disney from keeping the marketing machine going. So, today we have an extended clip from the film, which shows us a little too much of James Franco's arrival in the land of Oz. And, we also have a music video for Mariah Carey's song "Almost Home" which was written for the movie. Directed by Sam Raimi, "Oz the Great and Powerful" stars James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz.

Oz the Great and Powerful Movie Image

A new trailer, TV spot and movie clip for "Oz the Great and Powerful" have all been released today. The two trailers insist on aggresivley marketing the movie as a full blown action epic that seems to have more in common with this week's "Jack the Giant Slayer" than "The Wizard of Oz". Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie stars James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. "Oz the Great and Powerful" opens on March 8, in 3D.

Oz the Great and Powerful Picture

Three new movie clips have been released for the epic Disney movie "Oz the Great and Powerful". The clips show off the colourful visual effects and art direction of this prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" and I'm sure the movie will be a dazzling spectacle. I'm just not very sure it was entirely necessary. Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie stars James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. "Oz the Great and Powerful" opens on March 8, in 3D.

Oz the Great and Powerful Banner Poster
The new behind-the-scenes featurette for "Oz the Great and Powerful" provides a detailed look into the incredible epic process of creating the world of Oz. Actually, they just sort of brag about how epic the whole thing is. The featurette doesn't offer too much behind-the-scenes details. The cast and crew tease some of the conceptual ideas about the sets, make-up, costumes, visual effects and last, but (hopefully) not least, the story. The film is directed by Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man" trilogy) and stars James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. "Oz the Great and Powerful" opens on March 8, in 3D.

Michelle Williams as Glenda in Oz the Great and Powerful

A series of 3 new TV spots for Sam Raimi's "Oz the Great and Powerful" have been released and they tease the awesomeness of the prequel which stars James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. So far it looks impressive, but it could turn out to be just another CGI-fest with no substance, just another attempt to cash in on the popularity of reimagining classic stories (e.g. "Alice in Wonderland", "Snow White and the Huntsman").

But when his two best friends Casey and Miller surprise him with a visit for his 21st birthday, Jeff Chang decides to do everything he wants to do for a change, even though his important medical school interview is early the next morning. What was supposed to be one beer becomes a night of humiliation, over indulgence and utter debauchery in this coming-of-drinking-age-comedy, from the writers of THE HANGOVER, about living youth to its fullest."

"A supernatural love story set in the South, “Beautiful Creatures” tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl. Gangster Squad
"Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and-if he has his way-every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart."
