Weekend Box Office: TOY STORY 5 Scores Franchise-Best $159.6 Million Opening

Weekend Box Office Toy Story 5

Pixar's "Toy Story 5" effortlessly dominated the Juneteenth holiday weekend at the box office with a record-breaking debut. Meanwhile, Spielberg's "Disclosure Day" suffered a severe decline in its sophomore weekend, while "Obsession" and "Backrooms" continue to deliver strong performances. Other new semi-wide releases like "The Death of Robin Hood" and "Leviticus" failed to attract moviegoers.

"Toy Story 5" opened with $159.6 million from 4,425 theaters, which is an all-time best opening for the Pixar franchise. "Toy Story 4" was the previous record holder with a $120.9 million debut in 2019. That film went on to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide, which is also what is expected of the fifth installment. "Toy Story 5" also raked in another $152 million from international markets, bringing its global debut to $311.6 million. The film cost around $250 million to produce, so the break even margin should be at around $500 million. Both the critical and audience reception have been overwhelmingly positive (93% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).

Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi thriller "Disclosure Day" dropped to second place in its second weekend with $17.7 million, which is a steep 60.2% drop. The film has now grossed $78.9 million domestically and another $81.8 million internationally, which adds up to a worldwide cume of $160.8 million against a $115 million budget. The movie might eventually turn a profit because it wasn't too expensive compared to most blockbusters, but it's not quite the big hit everyone expected.

In third place, the sleeper hit horror film "Obsession" is still going strong, raking in $13.3 million in its sixth weekend, which is a soft 29.5% drop. Its domestic total is now at $215 million, while overseas it adds another $117 million for a worldwide total of $332 million. And it only cost $750,000 to produce.

The other surprise hit horror flick, "Backrooms" is lagging behind "Obsession", but still wildly successful. Now in its fourth week, the film is holding in fourth place with $7.1 million, a 37.7% decline from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $175 million in North America and another $98.4 million from foreign markets. The worldwide tally now sits at $273.5 million against a $10 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the spoof comedy sequel/reboot "Scary Movie" with $6.3 million. After a catastrophic 73.9% drop in its second weekend, the film now lost another 55% in its third week. However, the film is still very profitable, with $97.2 million domestically and $104.4 million internationally, which adds up to a worldwide cume of $201.6 million against a modest $30 million budget.

A24's "The Death of Robin Hood" didn't fare too well, opening in eighth place with $2.8 million from 1,762 theaters. It cost $20 million to produce, which means it needs around $40 million to recoup its budget. The critical reception was mixed (68% on Rotten Tomatoes), and moviegoers didn't seem to enjoy it, either ("C+").

In ninth place we find another new release, the horror film "Leviticus", which also performed poorly in its opening weekend, grossing $2.6 million from 1,076 theaters.
