captain america winter soldier box office

Marvel and Disney have done it again. Their latest production, the highly praised sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" stormed the box-office this weekend with a record-breaking April debut of $96 million in the U.S. and a total worldwide cume of $303 million. This is a gigantic result for the film, considering that its predecessor, "Captain America: The First Avenger" grossed $370 million worldwide in its entire theatrical run. The Captain is followed at a large distance by the Biblical epic "Noah" which dropped to second place by an equally epic 61% compared to its opening weekend. Third place is taken by "Divergent" which has made it past the $100 million mark. The top five is rounded up by the Christian drama "God's Not Dead" which continues to impress and has even expanded to an additional 1,758 theaters, and Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" which also expanded to 1,263 theaters this weekend.

Despite some initial controversy, Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic "Noah" exploded at No. 1 with $44 million, beyond all expectations. The film, starring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson, also performed well overseas, grossing and additional $51 million in three days. This is the biggest opening weekend performance for both Crowe and Aronofsky.

Second place was occupied by the young-adult sci-fi adventure "Divergent" starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James, which grossed $26 million, holding strong against fierce competition. The film is now very close to the $100 million mark.

The Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer "Sabotage" is officially a flop. The action thriller directed by David Ayer ("End of Watch") grossed only $5 million, despite a flashy marketing campaign and a star-studded cast. This is especially bad news for Schwarzenegger whose post-governor films have all flopped. In fact, "Sabotage" scored the worst opening weekend for the actor, behind "The Last Stand" ($6.2 million) and "Escape Plan" ($9.2 million).

In other box-office news, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" made its overseas debut and scored $75 million, a very solid foundation for when the movie will open in U.S. theaters next week (April 4th). And, Disney's "Frozen" has become the highest grossing animated film of all time with a worldwide cume of $1.072 billion, surpassing "Toy Story 3" ($1.063 billion). Furthermore, the film is now also on the top 10 list of biggest films of all time.

russell-crowe-noah-clips

A new trailer and an exclusive clip have been released for Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic "Noah". Some early reviews have been appearing online, most of them quite positive, which descrbed the film as a fantasy epic with phylosophical depths that will prove to be as divisive as Aronofsky's "The Fountain". Since I absolutely loved "The Fountain", this is great news for me. The film stars Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone, Douglas Booth, Kevin Durand, Martin Csokas, Mark Margolis and Anthony Hopkins.

"Noah" opens on March 28, 2014.

noah-2014-russell-crowe

The first trailers and poster for Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic "Noah" have been released. There are actually two trailers, the official trailer and the international version. As expected, it's an impressive looking film that will probably feature some wonderful performances from its great cast. The scope is very ambitious and if it gets everything right, it could become an instant classic and an example for future biblical flicks.

The film stars Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone, Douglas Booth, Kevin Durand, Martin Csokas, Mark Margolis and Anthony Hopkins.

On a side note, I couldn't help but think about "Troy" while watching these trailers. I hope that Aronofsky has succeeded in avoiding the trappings of such expensive Hollywood productions which sometimes forget about the human element amidst all the visual effects and epic battles, especially since there have been rumors that Aronofsky is having trouble with the studio regarding the final cut of the film. I'm betting that the studio wants more action, while Aronofsky is looking to achieve something deep and meaningful with this film.

"Noah" opens on March 28, 2014.

Check out the trailers and poster after the jump.

Cinematographer Matthew Libatique twitted an image from Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic "Noah". The image looks to be a pre-rendered image of some sort, showing us how the inside of the legendary arc will look like after filming and post-production. Libatique's Twitter caption for the image reads : "Pre lighting on the holiest day of the year." The film is currently in production and stars Russel Crowe as the title character, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Durand and Mark Margolis. The release date has been set for March 28, 2014. Click here to see the first official image of Russel Crowe as Noah.

I had no idea they were making "Scary Movie 5" until now, and I didn't really care to know, either. The quality of parody filmmaking these days has dropped to abyssal depths. Long gone are the days of Mel Brooks' cheeky parodies. Although the first two "Scary Movies" sparked some interest in the sub-genre, it wasn't long before they ran out of good jokes. Which is why, the fifth installment will give us a truly "scary" opening sequence, featuring Hollywood's most outrageous (and over-publicized) celebrities : Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. The scene apparently contains a sex scene between the two and the producers describe it as "outrageous, sexy and hilarious".

"Scary Movie 5" is directed by Malcom D. Lee ("Undercover Brother") and stars Ashley Tisdale, Molly Shannon, Kate Walsh and J.P. Manoux. The release date is set for April 19, 2013. Here is the official synopsis :
"Snooty, aloof, imperious, and oversexed French dance company director Pierre is putting on a new production. Jody, a Caucasian late-20s mother of two and her late-20s African American friend Kendra are both vying for the lead in the production. Jody's extremely controlling former dancer mother is determined that Jody will have the brilliant career that eluded her. The highly skilled mid-30s Diva veteran dancer with the company, Heather Daltry, gets cut from the production and goes berserk."

Lincoln (2012)

First official image from Steven Spielberg's biopic "Lincoln". The movie stars Daniel Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln and the transformation is remarkable, as you can see for yourselves in the picture on the left side. Not only that, but Daniel Day Lewis is famous for immersing himself entirely in the roles he plays, so it's no surprise that everyone on set is calling him "Mr. President" even when they're not filming. The historical drama also stars Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes, David Strathairn, Tim Blake Nelson, Bruce McGill, Jackie Earle Haley, Lee Pace and Jared Harris. The release date has been set for November 16, 2012.
