Argo Wins Oscar for Best Picture

The Oscar winners have been announced in what is probably considered one of the weakest shows in the Academy's history. But who really cares that Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane was more miss than hit as the show's host and that his attempts at humor were somewhat tasteless when not downright dull ? The important thing is that the participating movies were some of the most interesting and relevant of not only 2012, but also recent years.

Life of Pi Wins 4 OscarsThe Academy must have had a very hard time choosing winners, so the awards were pretty much evenly split among each of the major films. "Argo" took home 3 awards for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Editing, but it was "Life of Pi" who scored the most wins with 4 trophies for Best Director (Ang Lee), Cinematography, Original Score and Visual Effects.

"Les Miserables" won 3 Oscars for Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway), Sound Mixing and Makeup. "Django Unchained" earned 2 trophies for Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz) and Original Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino) and Spielberg's "Lincoln" also took home 2 awards for Best Leading Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Production Design. Among the movies rewarded with just one award: "Silver Linings Playbook" - Best Leading Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), "Amour" - Best Foreign Film, "Zero Dark Thirty" - Best Sound Editing and "Anna Karenina" - Best Costume Design. "Skyfall" won the expected award for Best Original Song (wonderfully performed live by Adele) and one for Sound Editing through a very rare case of a voting tie with "Zero Dark Thirty". Pixar's Brave also won Best Animated Feature, despite having some stiff competition for the first time in years.

As you can see, most of the major films of the year received due honors from the Academy, minus "Beasts of the Southern Wild", "The Master", "Flight" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", all of which received none, despite having several nominations, which in itself is still great honor.

Ben Affleck's Argo Wins Big at the 2013 BAFTAs

"Argo" was last night's big winner at the BAFTAs. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts handed out three awards to the true story drama: Best Film, Director (Ben Affleck) and Editing. Lead acting awards went to Daniel Day-Lewis for his commanding performance in Spielberg's "Lincoln" and Emmanuelle Riva for Michael Haneke's "Amour". Supporting honors went to Christoph Waltz for his performance in Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and Anne Hathaway for "Les Miserables". Quentin Tarantino picked up an award for Best Original Screenplay, while the Adapted Screenplay trophy went to David O. Russell for "Silver Linings Playbook".

Both the Producers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild announced the winners and it seems that the Oscar chances for Ben Affleck's "Argo" have increased dramatically. The true story drama won the PGA award for Best Picture and the SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. "Argo" has already secured the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director, so Affleck's third directorial outing is currently the favorite for the Best Picture Oscar, although Affleck himself has not been nominated for the Best Director award by the Academy. The only other picture in Oscar history to win Best Picture without a nomination for Best Director was "Driving Miss Daisy" in 1990. Other PGA winners include "Homeland", "Game Change" and "Modern Family" while the actors who took home trophies from the Screen Actors Guild include Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Hathaway

Check out both lists of winners after the jump.

The 2013 edition of the Golden Globes selected its winners and although "Lincoln" was a heavy contender, it was "Argo" that took home the Best Picture (Drama) award, as well as Best Director (Ben Affleck). Spielberg's historical drama did not go home empty handed, however, as Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln.

"Les Miserables" rounded up the most awards with wins for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical), Best Actor (Hugh Jackman) in a comedy or musical, and Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway). Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for her role in Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty", while Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy went to Jennifer Lawrence for "Silver Linings Playbook". "Django Unchained" also enjoyed some of the spotlight by winning Best Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino) and Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz).

Last thursday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 85th Annual Academy Awards. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" earned an astonishing 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Director and Leading Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis). Not far behind are Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" with 11 nods and "Les Miserables", directed by Tom Hooper and "Silver Linings Playbook", directed by David O. Russell, each with eight nominations.

One of the bigger surprises this year is the attention that the Academy focused on Michael Haneke's "Amour" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild". The french film earned not only the expected Foreign Film nomination but also 4 other nominations : Best Picture, Director, Writing (Original Screenplay) and Leading Actress (Emmanuelle Riva, 85 years old, the oldest nominee ever). "Beasts of the Southern Wild", an independent film which was extremely popular among critics in 2012 managed to earn 4 nominations : Best Picture, Director, Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and Best Leading Actress (Quvenzhané Wallis, 9 years old, the youngest nominee ever).

The awards show will take place on February 14 and will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane ("Family Guy", "Ted").
