The 2013 edition of the Golden Globes selected its winners and although "Lincoln" was a heavy contender, it was "Argo" that took home the Best Picture (Drama) award, as well as Best Director (Ben Affleck). Spielberg's historical drama did not go home empty handed, however, as Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln.

"Les Miserables" rounded up the most awards with wins for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical), Best Actor (Hugh Jackman) in a comedy or musical, and Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway). Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for her role in Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty", while Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy went to Jennifer Lawrence for "Silver Linings Playbook". "Django Unchained" also enjoyed some of the spotlight by winning Best Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino) and Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz).

Last thursday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 85th Annual Academy Awards. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" earned an astonishing 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Director and Leading Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis). Not far behind are Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" with 11 nods and "Les Miserables", directed by Tom Hooper and "Silver Linings Playbook", directed by David O. Russell, each with eight nominations.

One of the bigger surprises this year is the attention that the Academy focused on Michael Haneke's "Amour" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild". The french film earned not only the expected Foreign Film nomination but also 4 other nominations : Best Picture, Director, Writing (Original Screenplay) and Leading Actress (Emmanuelle Riva, 85 years old, the oldest nominee ever). "Beasts of the Southern Wild", an independent film which was extremely popular among critics in 2012 managed to earn 4 nominations : Best Picture, Director, Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and Best Leading Actress (Quvenzhané Wallis, 9 years old, the youngest nominee ever).

The awards show will take place on February 14 and will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane ("Family Guy", "Ted").

The nominations for this year's BAFTA awards revealed a lot of love for Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" which received no less than 10 nominations, including Best Film and Best Leading Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis). Spielberg however was snubbed for Best Director. The same situation applies to "Les Miserables". The musical managed to round up 9 nominations including Best Film, Best Leading Actor (Hugh Jackman) and Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway), but director Tom Hooper was left out. The BAFTAs also nominated "Skyfall" for 8 awards including Outstanding British Film, Best Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem) and Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench).

Gangster Squad

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

Les Miserables

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

Zero Dark Thirty

For a decade, an elite team of intelligence and military operatives, working in secret across the globe, devoted themselves to a single goal: to find and eliminate Osama bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty reunites the Oscar winning team of director-producer Kathryn Bigelow and writer-producer Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) for the story of history's greatest manhunt for the world's most dangerous man.

Safe Haven

An affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman's struggle to love again, Safe Haven is based on the novel from Nicholas Sparks, the best-selling author behind the hit films The Notebook and Dear John. When a mysterious young woman arrives in a small North Carolina town, her reluctance to join the tight knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller.

John Dies at the End

It’s a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.

Riddick

"The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy."

Stoker

"After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

"“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know."
