In Theaters: FROZEN 2, 21 BRIDGES, A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD and DARK WATERS

Disney is ready to take over once again at the box-office with the release of the highly anticipated sequel "Frozen 2". The film has already raked in $8.5 million from Thursday evening previews and there are expecations for a $100 million debut from 4,440 theaters. Reviews from the critics have been mixed-to-positive and CinemaScore gave the film an "A-", which is a step down from the original film's "A+".

The R-rated action thriller "21 Bridges" starring Chadwick Boseman" ("Black Panther") serves as an attempt at counterprogramming, but it's not expected to attract a very large audience. It only managed to deliver $700,000 from previews and it's possible it will finish the weekend with around $9 million from 2,665 theaters. The film has received a mixed reception from critics and moviegoers, with a "B+" from CinemaScore.

The Mister Rogers biopic "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" starring Tom Hanks also opened this week to rave reviews from critics. The film brought in only $900,000 from previews, but pacing so far suggests that it might end up with as much as $17 million from 3,235 theaters, which is a solid start.

Also in limited release, Focus has launched the fact-based drama "Dark Waters" in two locations in New York and Los Angeles. The film is directed by Todd Haynes ("Carol", "Far From Heaven") and it stars Mark Ruffalo, Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, Victor Garber, Mare Winningham and Bill Pullman.

"Frozen 2" is an animated musical fantasy film directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee from a script written by Lee. The film is a sequel to Disney's 2013 Oscar-winning animated film "Frozen" and it's set three years after the events of the first film, as Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven embark on a new adventure beyond their homeland of Arendelle. The voice cast features Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachel Wood, Alfred Molina, Jason Ritter, Ciaran Hinds and Jeremy Sisto.

"Frozen 2" opened in theaters on November 22, 2019.

Disney's FROZEN 2 is Officially in Development

It definitely took longer than it usually does in Hollywood, but now Disney has officially confirmed that a sequel to their animated hit "Frozen" is in development. Although there are no details about the plot at this point, the official announcement does mention that directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee will return to helm the sequel and that Josh Gad will return to voice Olaf. Here is the full press release:

"Winter weather ahead! Frozen 2 is officially in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios with directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and producer Peter Del Vecho, the Oscar®-winning filmmaking team behind Frozen.

The news was announced at Disney’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders this morning by Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company; John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; and actor Josh Gad, who provides the voice of Olaf from Frozen.

“We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters,” said John Lasseter. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.”

A release date and production details are yet to be announced."

Weekend Box-Office Report: NOAH, SABOTAGE

Despite some initial controversy, Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic "Noah" exploded at No. 1 with $44 million, beyond all expectations. The film, starring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson, also performed well overseas, grossing and additional $51 million in three days. This is the biggest opening weekend performance for both Crowe and Aronofsky.

Second place was occupied by the young-adult sci-fi adventure "Divergent" starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James, which grossed $26 million, holding strong against fierce competition. The film is now very close to the $100 million mark.

The Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer "Sabotage" is officially a flop. The action thriller directed by David Ayer ("End of Watch") grossed only $5 million, despite a flashy marketing campaign and a star-studded cast. This is especially bad news for Schwarzenegger whose post-governor films have all flopped. In fact, "Sabotage" scored the worst opening weekend for the actor, behind "The Last Stand" ($6.2 million) and "Escape Plan" ($9.2 million).

In other box-office news, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" made its overseas debut and scored $75 million, a very solid foundation for when the movie will open in U.S. theaters next week (April 4th). And, Disney's "Frozen" has become the highest grossing animated film of all time with a worldwide cume of $1.072 billion, surpassing "Toy Story 3" ($1.063 billion). Furthermore, the film is now also on the top 10 list of biggest films of all time.

Weekend Box-Office Report: NON-STOP, SON OF GOD

The airplane thriller "Non-Stop" starring Liam Neeson opened at No. 1 this weekend with $30 million, narrowly edging out the Biblical drama "Son of God", a feature film version of the TV mini-series "The Bible", which opened in second place with a surprising $26 million. The three-week No. 1 run of the animated feature "The LEGO Movie" ended this weekend, but the film still managed to cross the $200 million mark and grossed a solid $21 million in the last three days. Meanwhile, "Frozen" crossed the $1 billion mark this week.

2014 BAFTA Winners Announced; 12 YEARS A SLAVE and GRAVITY Win Big

Yesterday evening, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced this year's winners. The tight race between "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" has not been cleared, as both managed to nab top honors. "12 Years a Slave" won the awards for Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, but "Gravity" won the most awards, six including Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón. David O. Russell's "American Hustle" also performed well, taking home three awards including Best Original Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence. Cate Blanchett won the Leading Actress award, which was no surprise, but the evening did prove to have at least one unexpected surprise in store as Barkhad Abdi won the Supporting Actor award for his breakthrough performance in "Captain Phillips". Other winners include Disney's "Frozen" for Animated Feature and "The Great Beauty" for Best Film Not In the English Language.

Weekend Box-Office Report: THAT AWKWARD MOMENT, LABOR DAY

"Ride Along" managed to stay on top for a third consecutive weekend, grossing $12.3 million over the Super Bowl weekend and rising to a total of $92 million. Second place was taken by Disney's "Frozen", which climbed from No. 4 last week, thanks to the release of a sing-along version of the animated feature in more than 2,000 theaters. The sing-along version grossed $2.2 million on its own which added up to a $9.3 million total for the weekend. "Frozen" has now earned $864 million worldwide.

The new releases "That Awkward Moment" starring Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan and "Labor Day" starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin proved to be unremarkable, with the former bringing in an okay $9 million considering its $8 million budget, and the latter grossing $5.3 million, much worse for its $18 million budget.

In other news, Peter Berg's "Lone Survivor" reached and surpassed the $100 million mark domestically, "American Hustle" became David O. Russell's highest grossing movie with a domestic total currently at $133 million, and "I, Frankenstein" cemented its box-office bomb reputation by losing 59% from its already embarrassing opening weekend.

Weekend Box-Office Report: I, FRANKENSTEIN, RIDE ALONG

The comedy "Ride Along" maintained its top position at the box-office this week, grossing $21 million which adds up to a total of $75 million in just 10 days. The comedy has performed beyond anyone's wildest expectations and looks to reach the $100 million milestone in the next week. So did Peter Berg's Afghanistat war drama "Lone Survivor", which held steady at No. 2 with a total gross of $93.6 million.

Another impressive situation is that of Disney's mega-hit "Frozen". The animated feature has climbed one spot to No. 4 and has grossed $810 million worldwide, of which $347 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing original animated movie ever (topping "Finding Nemo").

Much less impressive was this weekend's new release, "I, Frankenstein". The expensive comic book adptation, an attempt to cash-in on the success of the "Underworld" franchise, tanked on its opening weekend, grossing a poor $8 million versus a $65 million. The film ranked sixth.

2014 Producers Guild Awards Winners; 12 YEARS A SLAVE and GRAVITY Tie for Best Picture

I personally though that this year's Producers Guild Awards could settle the dispute of which movie has the definitive chance to win the Best Picture Oscar, since in the past six years, the PGA have accurately matched the Oscar winners. Well, that's all in the past now. The PGA announced the winners last night, and in an unprecedented move "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" were tied for Best Picture. After "American Hustle" won top honors at the SAG awards, many predicted that David O. Russell's film would also score a win at the PGA, but that clearly wasn't the case. Now, the Oscars race is wide open and predictions are going to be very tough to make.

Disney's "Frozen" won the Best Animated Feature award and "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" won in the Documentary category. In television, "Breaking Bad", "Modern Family" and "Behind the Candelabra" won top honors.

Weekend Box-Office Report: RIDE ALONG, JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT, THE NUT JOB, DEVIL'S DUE

Unsurprisingly, the action comedy "Ride Along" starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube stormed the box-office this weekend and with its $41 million gross (versus a $25 million budget), it has scored the best performance of all-time for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. The previous record-holder was 2008's "Cloverfield" which grossed $40 million in three days.

Weekend Box-Office Report: LONE SURVIVOR, THE LEGEND OF HERCULES

Peter Berg's true story war actioner "Lone Survivor" provided the biggest surprise of the weekend at the box-office. The film received its wide release this weekend, and, as expected, it went straight to the top. But, what nobody saw coming was that the film would go on to gross $38 million in its first three days of wide release, double the amount that was projected by the studio itself. Far behind, but holding strong in second place is Disney's surprisingly resilient animation project "Frozen", which has earned $15 million this weekend and a total $317 million in the US alone. The worldwide cume of the film now stands at $712 million, the best of any of Walt Disney Animation Studios' projects. The previous record holder for the studio was 2010's "Tangled", which grossed $591 million worldwide.

The week's other new wide release, Renny Harlin's "The Legend of Hercules" is 2014's first major flop. The action epic opened in fourth place with $8.6 million, small change compared to its costly $70 million budget. Bad production values, acting, writing and directing were widely cited by critics as reasons to stay away from this movie, and it seems that audiences agreed.

Last week's "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" took a steep dive, falling from No.2 to No.9 with a 65% drop at the box-office. The spin-off is, so far, the worst of the franchise as far as earnings go and it looks like the franchise is not ready to break out of its Halloween schedule.

Weekend Box-Office Report: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES

The box-office this weekend offered a bit of a surprise, as Disney's animated feature "Frozen" managed to climb back to the top, scoring $20 million and a domestic total of $297 million, while the "Paranormal Activity" spin-off "The Marked Ones" landed in second place. The found-footage horror has the lowest wide opening of all the "Paranormal Activity" films. The highest-grossing of the five films in the franchise was "Paranormal Activity 3" which earned $52 million in its first three days. Still, "The Marked Ones" had a budget of only $5 million, like most of the franchise's installments, and with an additional $16 million earned overseas, it's still outrageously profitable.

The spin-off's reduced profits could be attributed to the fact that the "Paranormal Activity" films usually do well during Halloween. The decision to throw out this latest installment so soon after the winter holiday is strange, to say the least, but "The Marked Ones" is only a spin-off, and the direct sequel, "Paranormal Activity 5" will be released, as usual, on October 24, 2014.

Weekend Box-Office Report: THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, 47 RONIN, GRUDGE MATCH, THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

The holiday season offered a considerable boost to both new and old releaseas at the box-office, but the most interesting race was the one for the top spot between "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" and Disney's surprise hit "Frozen". Eventually, Peter Jackson's second installment in the prequel trilogy managed to land in first place with $29.9 million, with "Frozen" close behind at $28.8 million. The animated feature registered a 47% increase from last weekend, while Jackson's Tolkien adaptation managed to hold steady with only a 5% decrease. Other movies that benefited from the holiday boost were "American Hustle", "Saving Mr. Banks" (up by 50%) and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire".

Other movies were not as fortunte, like Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" which managed to enter the top 10 at #5 with a modest $18 million in its wide debut, and Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" similarly fell behind at #7 with $13 million.

Even less fortunate was the Keanu Reeves starrer "47 Ronin" which only earned $9.8 million during the weekend and $20 million in the 5 days since Christmas, which is especially bad considering the film cost $200 million to make. Another holiday flop was the Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone team-up "Grudge Match" which fell outside the top 10 in its opening weekend and earned $7.3 million and $13 million since Christmas, versus a budget of $40 million.

Weekend Box Office Report: OUT OF THE FURNACE, FROZEN, THE HUNGER GAMES

Although this weekend was considerably slower at the box-office, the battle was still fierce between "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and Disney's animated feature "Frozen". The former lost first place this weekend and dropped down to No.2, while the latter climbed from second place to No.1. It was a spectacular switch by a difference of almost $5 million. The disappointing debut of the week was that of director Scott Cooper's new drama "Out of the Furnace", which despite some incredible starpower (Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe) only managed to open third with $5 million. Although not an expensive movie ($22 million budget), it's still a weak opening that qualifies the film as a major flop.
