2014 Oscars Winners Announced; GRAVITY and 12 YEARS A SLAVE Split Top Honors

The 2014 Academy Awards proved to be very unsurprising, despite a highly competitive year filled with solid movies and amazing performances. As expected, the Academy voters were split between the slavery drama "12 Years a Slave" which won Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’O), and the sci-fi adventure "Gravity" which picked up the most awards, seven, including Best Director (Alfonso Cuaron) and most of the technical honors. Equally unsurprising were the acting categories where Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett and Jared Leto took home their well deserved trophies. Probably the single most impressive surprise of the evening was that Spike Jonze won Best Original Screenplay for "Her", one of the few films of 2013 that can truly be called original.

2014 Independent Spirit Awards Winners Announced

The Independent Spirit Awards announced the winners and it was no surprise to anyone that "12 Years a Slave" was the big winner. The drama won five awards, including Best Feature, Director (Steve McQueen), Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Screenplay (John Ridley). Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto were rewarded for their performances in "Dallas Buyers Club", and Cate Blanchett took home the trophy for Best Female Lead.

2014 BAFTA Winners Announced; 12 YEARS A SLAVE and GRAVITY Win Big

Yesterday evening, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced this year's winners. The tight race between "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" has not been cleared, as both managed to nab top honors. "12 Years a Slave" won the awards for Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, but "Gravity" won the most awards, six including Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón. David O. Russell's "American Hustle" also performed well, taking home three awards including Best Original Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence. Cate Blanchett won the Leading Actress award, which was no surprise, but the evening did prove to have at least one unexpected surprise in store as Barkhad Abdi won the Supporting Actor award for his breakthrough performance in "Captain Phillips". Other winners include Disney's "Frozen" for Animated Feature and "The Great Beauty" for Best Film Not In the English Language.

2014 Producers Guild Awards Winners; 12 YEARS A SLAVE and GRAVITY Tie for Best Picture

I personally though that this year's Producers Guild Awards could settle the dispute of which movie has the definitive chance to win the Best Picture Oscar, since in the past six years, the PGA have accurately matched the Oscar winners. Well, that's all in the past now. The PGA announced the winners last night, and in an unprecedented move "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" were tied for Best Picture. After "American Hustle" won top honors at the SAG awards, many predicted that David O. Russell's film would also score a win at the PGA, but that clearly wasn't the case. Now, the Oscars race is wide open and predictions are going to be very tough to make.

Disney's "Frozen" won the Best Animated Feature award and "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" won in the Documentary category. In television, "Breaking Bad", "Modern Family" and "Behind the Candelabra" won top honors.

2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards Winners Announced

The Screen Actors Guild announced their winners last evening and "American Hustle" took home the award for Best Ensemble, which is fitting considering that all four protagonists of David O. Russell's film, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence were nominated for Oscars this year. Other winners include Cate Blancett for "Blue Jasmine", Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto for "Dallas Buyers Club", Lupita Nyong’O for "12 Years a Slave", and in the TV categories, "Modern Family" and "Breaking Bad" won top honors.

2014 Oscar Nominations Announced; Find out More About the Happy and the Snubbed

The nominations for the 2014 Academy Awards were announced yesterday and, as usual, there were several surprises and snubs. First of all, the major contenders this year are "American Hustle" and "Gravity", each with 10 nominations, followed by "12 Years a Slave" with 9 nods. The race will be extremely close, and as the Golden Globes have proven, every movie will get its fair share, but there won't be any one winner to sweep all categories. 2014 BAFTA Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 2014 BAFTA Awards have been announced. This year's top contenders at the British awards are Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" with 11 nominations, followed by Steve McQueen's drama "12 Years a Slave" and David O. Russell's "American Hustle" with 10 nods each, and Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips" with 9 noms.

2014 Directors Guild Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 2014 Directors Guild Award have been announced, and once again, there are no major surprises. Of course, as was the case with the other Guild Awards, Joel and Ethan Coen were not nominated for "Inside Llewyn Davis". Other snubs include Spike Jonze for "Her" and Alexander Payne for "Nebraska", but that doesn't mean that they are completely out of the Oscars race. As history has proved repeatedly, the DGA Awards don't always line up perfectly with the Academy Award nominations. Here are the nominees:

The nominees for the 2014 Producers Guild Awards have been announced and they pretty much include all of the year's main award contenders, without any real surprises. In the theatrical category, the list of nominees includes "American Hustle", "The Wolf of Wall Street", "12 Years a Slave", "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Gravity", while the television nominees include "Breaking Bad", "American Horror Story: Asylum", "House of Cards", "Modern Family", "Veep" and "30 Rock". The winners of the 25th annual Producers Guild Awards will be announced on January 19, 2014.

71st Annual Golden Globes Nominees Announced

The nominees for the 71st Annual Golden Globes have been announced. The nominations include some of the year's usual suspects, including "12 Years a Slave", "Captain Phillips", "Gravity", "Inside Llewyin Davis" and "American Hustle", but also some unusually surprising choices for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including nominations for Spike Jonze's "Her", "Nebraska" and "Labor Day". Other surprise contenders are "Rush" and "Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom". "Blue is the Warmest Color" was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category and has the best chance to win the award. The winners will be announced on January 12, 2014, and the ceremony will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

SAG Awards 2014 Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 20th Annual SAG Awards have been announced. The top contenders in the film and TV categories are "12 Years a Slave" with four nominations and "Breaking Bad", respectively. Other nominated films include "August: Osage County", "Dallas Buyers Club", "Gravity", "The Butler", "American Hustle" and "Nebraska". Among the traditional snubs this year we have Robert Redford who was not nominated for his performance in "All is Lost" and the cast of "Saving Mr. Banks". While "The Wolf of Wall Street" and its star Leonardo DiCaprio were not nominated, it's not actually a snub. The Martin Scorsese flick was in fact not eligible because it missed the SAG voting deadline. The SAG ceremony will take place on Jan. 18, 2014, at 8 p.m. ET.

2014 Independent Spirit Awards Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards have been announced. The main contenders include Steve McQueen's drama "12 Years a Slave" which has earned seven nominations, followed by Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" with six nods and the lost-at-sea drama "All is Lost" starring Robert Redford, with four noms. The Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" was nominated for Best Feature, Best Male Lead (Oscar Isaac) and Best Cinematography. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was nominated for Best First Screenplay for his work on "Don Jon".

12 YEARS A SLAVE - Exclusive Movie Clip

A new clip has been released for the drama "12 Years a Slave". This is the true story of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York in the pre-Civil War United States, who was abducted, sold into slavery, and struggled to survive for twelve years before regaining his freedom. The clip finds Northup and fellow captives discussing a plan to stay alive. The film also stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Quvenzhane Wallis, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Scoot McNairy, Garrett Dillahunt, Alfre Woodard, Dwight Henry and Michael Kenneth Williams. "12 Years a Slave" opens in theaters on October 18th (limited) and expands on November 1st.

12 YEARS A SLAVE Featurette - A Portrait of Solomon Northup

The first behind-the-scenes featurette for "12 Years a Slave" has been released. The featurette offers plenty of footage from the film, interviews and background information about Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), the protagonist of this true story. Northup was a free black man from New York in 1841, who was abducted and sold into slavery for 12 years. The film also stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Quvenzhane Wallis, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Scoot McNairy, Garrett Dillahunt, Alfre Woodard, Dwight Henry and Michael Kenneth Williams. "12 Years a Slave" opens on October 18, 2013, but will premiere before that at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Michael Fassbender Chiwetel Ejiofor Twelve Years a Slave

The first trailer, poster and 6 official images for the historical drama "12 Years a Slave" have been released. The film tells the true story of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from New York, who was abducted and sold into slavery for 12 years. The film also stars Michael Fassbender as a cruel plantation owner and Brad Pitt as a Canadian abolitionist who ultimately saves Northup from slavery. The all-star cast also features Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Quvenzhane Wallis, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Scoot McNairy, Garrett Dillahunt, Alfre Woodard, Dwight Henry and Michael Kenneth Williams. "12 Years a Slave" opens on December 27, 2013.
