Sylvester Stallone joins THE SUICIDE SQUAD sequel
Sylvester Stallone has joined the cast of the "Suicide Squad" sequel. The casting was announced by writer/director James Gunn on Instagram.

Stallone himself confirmed his participation by posting a video to Instagram acknowledging he was on his way to go film a scene. Stallone previously worked with Gunn on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", in which he played Stakar Ogord, who turns into the hero Starhawk.

The cast features Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Peter Capaldi, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K. and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Gunn also penned the script, and used the '80s Suicide Squad comics as inspiration.

Gunn also has a Suicide Squad spinoff series in the works. Titled "Peacemaker", the show centers on Cena's character, and it's currently in development at HBO Max. Danielle Brooks, Chris Conrad, Jennifer Holland and Robert Patrick have already been cast. Gunn is writing the series, and will also direct several episodes, including the pilot.

"The Suicide Squad" will open in theaters on August 6, 2021.

Idris Elba to replace Will Smith in Suicide Squad 2
Idris Elba is very close to joining the DC Comics cinematic universe as sources report that the actor is in talks with Warner Bros to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in the upcoming "Suicide Squad" sequel. Smith had to drop out last week due to scheduling conflicts.

The sequel, simply titled "The Suicide Squad" will be directed by "Guardians of the Galaxy" filmmaker James Gunn, after the first film's helmer David Ayer declined to return. Gunn also penned the script, which Warner seems to like a whole lot. Sources say that Gunn met with Elba on Friday and things went really well. Apparently, the actor was the "first and only choice" for both the studio and Gunn.

The follow-up will feature mostly DC characters that did not appear in the 2016 film, but also returning characters like Deadshot, Harley Quinn and, maybe, Rick Flagg. In a way the film will be a soft reboot, since its predecessor has received a largely negative reception. Although Margot Robbie is starring in her own Harley Quinn spinoff titled "Birds of Prey", she has not been confirmed for the "Suicide Squad" sequel.

Elba can be seen this year as the villain in the upcoming "Fast & Furious" spin-off "Hobbs & Shaw", and has finished work on the adaptation of the Broadway musical "Cats".

"The Suicide Squad" will be released on August 6, 2021.

There were no big finishes for this year's Labor Day weekend. With two new wide releases ("The Light Between Oceans" and "Morgan") failing to make it into the Top 5, last week's #1 movie, "Don't Breathe", had no problem holding on to the top spot.

in-theaters-suicide-squad-nine-lives-the-little-prince-little-men

This week in theaters, it's time to switch from the MCU to the DCEU, as "Suicide Squad" explodes on the big screen. If comic book movies aren't your thing, there's really not much to choose from this week, since few studios would dare face off against a comic book movie. But wait, it seems someone did dare to release an epic film called "Nine Lives" which is about Kevin Spacey turning into a cat. In limited release, things are a lot more interesting, with the animated film "The Little Prince" and the indie drama "Little Men" receiving a lot of positive reviews from critics. More about each movie after the jump.

suicide-squad-blitz-trailer

Today we have a new trailer for Warner Bros' comic book adaptation "Suicide Squad".

The trailer once again blends classic 1970s music (I still prefer the Bohemian Rhapsody version) with a barrage of action sequences and gags, proving once more that this won't the tiresome spectacle that "Batman V Superman" was. Director David Ayer also addressed the issue of the reshoots that many claimed were demanded by the studio to inject more humor into the movie. Ayer says that in fact the reshoots were done to add more action to the film:

The film stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, Adam Beach, Ike Barinholtz, Raymond Olubowale, Jim Parrack, Alex Meraz, Scott Eastwood, Ben Affleck and Common.

new-suicide-squad-international-trailer-and-posters

Warner Bros has released a new international trailer and ten posters for "Suicide Squad". This trailer is essentially a shorter version of the previous one which also made great use of Queen's song "Bohemian Rhapsody". The film is now undergoing some reshoots which the studio apparently ordered to inject some more humor into what they fear could end up as dark and dull as "Batman V Superman". Time will tell if that's a good or a bad thing.

Directed by David Ayer ("Fury"), the film stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, Adam Beach, Ike Barinholtz, Raymond Olubowale, Jim Parrack, Alex Meraz, Scott Eastwood, Ben Affleck and Common.

new-suicide-squad-trailer-and-posters

Today we have the first official trailer and twelve posters for David Ayer's "Suicide Squad". This isn't actually the first trailer ever, but it's an official one, unlike the summer Comic-Con version that Warner Bros. reluctantly released after a bad quality version leaked online. This new one is actually better. More vibrant, with clearly more polished CGI, a great use of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, and a much more detailed look at the characters.

The DC Comics adaptation stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as Joker, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Ike Barinholtz as Hugo Strange, Raymond Olubowale as King Shark and Jim Parrack as Jonny Frost, Alex Meraz, Scott Eastwood and Common co-star in unknown roles, and Ben Affleck as Batman.

"Suicide Squad" opens in theaters on August 5, 2016.
