Last week, Disney released "The Mandalorian and Grogu", the first new "Star Wars" movie in over six years, and it topped the box office charts. Just one week later, everyone has already forgotten there's a "Star Wars" movie in theaters. It's the small budget horror films that have captured all the attention.
A24's newly released creepypasta-inspired horror flick "Backrooms" matched the Mandalorian movie's opening, while "Obsession" continues to grow in its third consecutive weekend. Not particularly good news for big studios, but fantastic news for theaters and the future of cinema.
Other new releases like the comedy "The Breadwinner" starring Nate Bargatze, and the historical WWII drama "Pressure" starring Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser, failed to attract moviegoers.

A24's "Backrooms" surpassed even the wildest expectations and opened with an incredible $81.4 million from 3,442 theaters. Here's something to compare it to: "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" opened with $81.6 million from 4,300 theaters. The horror film also added another $36.5 million from international markets for a worldwide total of $117.9 million. The film cost only $10 million to produce. Critics loved it (88% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was lukewarm ("B-" CinemaScore).
Focus Features' horror film "Obsession" wasn't hurt one bit by another genre flick dominating the box office, and even managed to grow for a second consecutive week. Now in its third weekend, it raked in another $27.3 million, a 14.3% increase from last week. The domestic tally is now at $105.7 million, while internationally it sits at $44.7 million. That's a global total of $150.5 million. And it only cost around $1 million to produce.
In third place we find last week's #1 movie, "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu", with $24.4 million after a catastrophic 70.1% decline. Mandalorian's second weekend is lower than the sophomore weekend of "Solo: A Star Wars Story" ($29.3 million, 65.2% drop). It's also the franchise's biggest second weekend drop after "The Last Jedi" (-67.5%). Domestically, the film has now grossed $136.8 million, while overseas it adds another $109.2 million for a global cume of $246 million. With a reported budget of $165 million, it would need around $350-400 million to break even. This could end up being another Disney-era "Star Wars" flop.
The biopic "Michael" is still going strong, finishing its sixth weekend in fourth place with $11.8 million, down 42.5% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $340 million in North America, and another $509.8 million from foreign markets. The worldwide tally is now at $849.9 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by another new wide release, the Sony comedy "The Breadwinner", which unfortunately tanked with $7.3 million from 3,252 theaters. The film cost around $25 million to produce, so the break-even margin should be at around $50 million. The critical reception was negative (22% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers seemed to enjoy it ("A-" CinemaScore).
The last of the new wide releases, the Focus Features WWII drama "Pressure", opened in seventh place with $5.8 million from 1,829 theaters. No budget details are available, but it couldn't have been cheap. Certainly not cheap enough to turn a profit with a $5 million opening weekend. On a positive note, the film was very well received by both critics and audiences (88% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).
