The "Resident Evil" reboot directed by Zach Cregger ("Barbarian", "Weapons") dominated the weekend box office and broke records with a solid debut, while "Practical Magic 2" stumbled in its sophomore frame. Other new releases didn't do so well. The weekend's underperformers include the historical drama "The Weight" starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, the Biblical drama "Daniel and the Fiery Furnace" starring Mena Messoud ("Aladdin"), and the stop motion animated film "Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom".

"Resident Evil" opened in first place with $60.1 million from 3,684 theaters, which is the biggest opening the horror franchise has ever had. It's even more impressive considering it's R-rated and has no major stars attached. The film is also the most expensive film in the franchise, with a budget estimated at around $75 million. With another $48.3 million from international screens, the film's weekend total is $108.4 million, which is more than half of what it needs to become profitable, so I'd say it's off to a great start. It also helps that it's the most well-reviewed film in the entire franchise, scoring a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience reception is a bit more lukewarm ("B+" CinemaScore), but it's still a lot better than most genre films.
Last week's #1 movie, "Practical Magic 2", is down to #2 with $12.1 million, which is a steep 59.5% decline from an already modest debut. The film has now grossed $50 million in North America, and another $26.8 million from foreign markets, which brings its worldwide total to $76.8 million. Since the film cost $75 million to produce, it would need around $140-150 million to break even, and I don't think it can rake in that kind of money. There's barely any hope of it reaching $100 million. This one is definitely a flop.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" finished its eighth weekend in third place with $6.4 million, down 23.7% from last week. The film has now grossed $944.4 million domestically and $1.53 billion internationally. That's a worldwide cume of $2.47 billion. It is now the highest-grossing domestic release ever, and the third highest-grossing film of all time.
Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" ended up in fourth place in its tenth weekend, raking in another $4.9 million, which is a 34.8% decline from its previous frame. The film's domestic total has now reached $609.8 million, while overseas it adds another $1.11 billion for a worldwide total of $1.72 billion. The film is currently the biggest R-rated film of all time, and the eleventh-highest grossing film of all time. It's also Universal's highest-grossing film ever.
"Coyote vs. Acme" is holding in fifth place with $4.4 million, which is a soft 31.1% decline. The film is holding much better than expected, and its domestic tally is now at $54.7 million, which is $4 million more than what Ketchup Entertainment paid to acquire the flick from Warner Bros. Overseas it raked in another $25.7 million, bringing its global total to $80.4 million. Considering the indie company only paid an additional $10 million for advertising, I'd say they've done pretty well with this one.

It received a positive reception from critics (93%), and was fairly well liked by moviegoers ("B+"), but it wasn't enough to get people to actually go see it. Meanwhile, the Aardman Animation movie "Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom" failed to make the Top 10, grossing only $1.8 million from 2,183 screens.
