Venice Film Festival 2026 Winners: May El-Toukhy's WOMAN UNKNOWN Wins Golden Lion

Venice Film Festival 2026 Winners Woman Unknown

The winners of the 2026 Venice Film Festival have been revealed, and the big winner was the Danish WWII drama "Woman Unknown" ("Kvinde Ukendt") directed by May el-Toukhy. For the same film, Danish actress Mathilde Arcel received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress.

The Volpi Cup for Best Actor went to John Malkovich for his performance in Martin McDonagh's darkly comic action thriller "Wild Horse Nine", which has already sparked talks of an Oscar nomination.

The festival's second biggest honor, the Grand Jury Prize, went to the South Korean drama "Possible Love" written and directed by Lee Chang-dong. The Silver Lion for Best Director was given to Russian dissident Ilya Khrzhanovsky's historical drama "Dau".

The competition jury included Maggie Gyllenhaal, director Kaouther Ben Hania ("The Voice of Hind Rajab"), Hong Kong filmmaking legend Johnnie To, Afghan filmmaker Shahrbanoo Sadat, French director and screenwriter Xavier Giannoli, composer Daniel Blumberg ("The Brutalist") and US-based Italian film academic Francesco Casetti.
