The superhero flick "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and Christopher Nolan's epic "The Odyssey" are still holding very well in their sixth and eighth weekend, respectively, and effortlessly conquered Labor Day with little in the way of competition. The two films helped push the summer box office to an all time record of $4.76 billion (May 1 - September 7). The previous record was set in 2013 with $4.75 billion.
The only new wide releases were the true story thriller "By Any Means", the survival thriller "Fall 2: Deadpoint" and the horror action film "Onslaught", but neither performed spectacularly, and the latter two actually fell short of the Top 10.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is holding in first place for a sixth consecutive weekend, raking in another $18.1 million, which is a much softer 19.3% decline, for a domestic total of $917.9 million. The 4-day holiday total is around $23.3 million. Overseas, the film has now grossed $1.48 billion, which brings the worldwide total to $2.4 billion.
"The Odyssey" climbed one position, from #3 to #2, and grossed $13 million over the weekend, which is an incredible 9% drop, its lowest yet, in the film's eighth week. The 4-day holiday gross is around $17.2 million. The domestic total has now reached $589 million, while overseas it raked in $1.04 billion, which brings its global cume to $1.63 billion. This makes it the 14th biggest movie worldwide.
Ketchup Entertainment's "Coyote vs. Acme" was off to a rough start last week, but more than made up for it over the Labor Day weekend, with $11.9 million, which a solid 24.8% drop in its sophomore frame. Word-of-mouth definitely helped this one. After the 4-day holiday, the film raked in $14.5 million. The film's domestic total is now at $38.3 million, while overseas it adds another $7.3 million for a worldwide total of $45.6 million, which is close to recouping Ketchup Entertainment the $50 million it paid to acquire the movie from Warner Bros. Since Ketchup only invested an additional $10 million in marketing, the movie needs $60 million to break even, which it could actually pull off, considering how well it did in its second weekend.
The first of the new wide releases, Paramount's "By Any Means", opened in fourth place with $7.5 million from 2,903 theaters. The movie cost $29 million to produce, which isn't particularly expensive, but with additional marketing costs its break-even point is probably at around $60-70 million. This movie will lose money for Paramount. Both the critical and audience reception were mixed (52% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B+" CinemaSCore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the horror flick "Insidious: Out of the Further", which raked in another $6.5 million in its third weekend, down 36.3% from the previous frame. The film has grossed a total of $55.6 million in North America, and $83.5 million from foreign markets, bringing its global tally to $139.1 million agaist a production budget of only $18 million.
At #6 we find the re-release of Pixar's "Cars" with $6.2 million from 2,900 theaters, while the re-release of the classic 1988 anime "Akira" landed outside the Top 10 with $2.6 million from 787 theaters.
