Weekend Box Office: VERITY Tops The Charts While Tom Cruise's DIGGER Bombs Hard

Weekend Box Office Verity Tops The Charts While Tom Cruise Digger Bombs Hard

The new Colleen Hoover adaptation "Verity" starring Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett and Dakota Johnson dominated the box office with a solid debut. Unfortunately, the Tom Cruise starrer "Digger" directed by Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu suffered a catastrophic opening that will probably go into the history books.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Verity" is another bonafide Collen Hoover hit, opening at the top with $32 million from 3,510 theaters, which puts it below the opening of 2024's "It Ends with Us" ($50 million), but ahead of last year's "Regretting You" ($48.8 million) and this year's "Reminders of Him" ($17.9 million). "Verity" also raked in $29.8 million internationally, which brings the global debut to $61.8 million against a $40 million budget. Interestingly enough, despite the solid box office debut, the film received a negative reception from both critics and moviegoers (33% on Rotten Tomatoes and "C+" on CinemaScore).

The new "Resident Evil" movie is holding in second place with $12.6 million, dropping just 45.2% in its third weekend in theaters. The film's domestic total has reached $125 million, while overseas it adds another $121.4 million for a worldwide total of $246.4 million against a $75 million budget.

The Brad Pitt survival thriller "Heart of the Beast" is also holding in third place with $10.8 million in its second weekend, which is a decent 45.7% drop from a somewhat disappointing debut. While domestically it only raked in $38.2 million, overseas it's doing better, raking in $60.3 million, which brings the global cume to $98.5 million. However, the movie cost $82 million to produce, which puts its break-even point at around $160-170 million.

Warner Bros' "Digger" made its debut in fourth place with only $8 million from 3,321 theaters, which is Tom Cruise's lowest opening ever. Well, not accounting for inflation, you could say that "Rain Man" is the lowest with only $7 million in 1988, but that opening is around $19.8 million adjusted for 2026 inflation. "Digger" only added another $12 million from foreign markets, which brings its worldwide debut to $20 million against a massive $180 million budget and an estimated $100 million in marketing costs.

According to pundits, "Digger" is expected to lose around $150 million, which is especially interesting as the catastrophic opening weekend comes as Paramount Skydance just completed its acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery. It's been a rough year for Warner Bros, as the studio's 2026 movies have all failed to cross the $100 million mark in the US. Of course, that will all change with the release of "Dune: Part III" in December. It also doesn't help that both the critical and audience reception for "Digger" have been divisive, to say the least (51% on Rotten Tomatoes and "C+" on CinemaScore).

The Top 5 is rounded out by the Chris Hansen biopic "Primetime" starring Robert Pattinson, which raked in another $8 million in its second weekend (a steep 57.5% drop), bringing its domestic total to $34 million.
