It was a busy weekend at the box office with three new releases, a huge re-release, and last week's #1 movie all fighting for supremacy. In the end, the re-release of 2019's "Avengers Endgame", subtitled "Encore", claimed the top spot, not just in the US, but also in international markets, while the hit video game adaptation "Resident Evil" had to settle for second place. The rest of the Top 5 is populated by the three new wide releases: the Brad Pitt survival thriller "Heart of the Beast", the fact-based psychological thriller "Primetime" starring Robert Pattinson, and DreamWorks' new animated feature "Forgotten Island".

"Avengers Endgame: Encore" opened in first place with $26.1 million from 3,060 theaters. As far as re-releases go, it ranks third, behind the 1997 Special Edition of "Star Wars", which opened with $35.9 million, and the 2011 3D re-release of "The Lion King", which grossed $30.1 million in its opening weekend. Overseas, "Encore" adds another $60 million for a worldwide total of $86.1 million.
"Resident Evil" dropped to second place in its sophomore weekend, raking in another $23 million, which is a steep 61.7% drop from its debut, but not unusual for the horror genre. The film's domestic total has now reached $103.1 million, while overseas it adds another $93 million for a global total of $196.1 million against a $75 million budget.
The Brad Pitt starrer "Heart of the Beast" made its debut in third place with $20 million from 3,435 theaters, which is on par with Pitt's flop "Ad Astra" ($19 million opening), and well below last year's "F1" ($57 million). The film also grossed $30.1 million overseas, which brings its worldwide cume to $50.1 million. Considering the film's hefty $82 million budget (before marketing), this one has the potential to flop. However, it could benefit from some healthy word-of-mouth, as both the critical and audience reception are positive (86% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A-" CinemaScore).
A24's "Primetime", which stars Robert Pattinson as "To Catch a Predator" host Chris Hansen, opened in fourth place with $19.1 million from 2,874 theaters. It's a solid debut, and it has the potential to be another A24 sleeper hit. The film only cost around $14 million to produce. The critical reception was positive (87% on Rotten Tomatoes), while moviegoers were more mixed ("B" CinemaScore).
Universal and DreamWorks Animation's "Forgotten Island" tanked in fifth place with $13 million from 3,548 theaters. It's a similar start to 2022's "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish", which opened with $12.4 million and ended its theatrical run with $186 million. Then again, it could end up more like Universal's "Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie", which opened with $13.6 million, and went on to gross just $32 million. Overseas it only raked in another $7.7 million for a worldwide total of $20.7 million. The film's budget is estimated at around $80 million, without marketing costs. "Forgotten Island" was well received by both critics and moviegoers (95% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).
