Golden Globe nominee Margaret Qualley ("The Substance") and Grammy winner Sabrina Carpenter have joined the cast of Sony Pictures' untitled Fred Astaire biopic directed by Paul King ("Wonka", "Paddington") from a script he co-wrote alongside Steven Levenson ("Fosse/Verdon"), Lee Hall ("Billy Elliot", "War Horse") and Micah Schraft ("The Tomorrow People") based on the book "The Astaires: Fred & Adele" by Kathleen Riley. Riley also serves as a script and story consultant.
The film stars Tom Holland as the iconic dancer, while Qualley will star as Adele Astaire, and Carpenter will play Ginger Rogers. Fred and Adele were major stars on Broadway and London's West End before Fred went on to become one of cinema's greatest stars, alongside co-star and dance partner Ginger Rogers. Astaire starred in more than 30 film musicals, including classics like "Swing Time" (1936), "The Gay Divorcee" (1934) and "Top Hat" (1935).
Ava Astaire McKenzie, Fred Astaire's daughter, and her son, Tyler McKenzie, who serves as a consultant and co-producer on the project, have also shared their support. Astaire McKenzie said the following: "I'm delighted to support this endeavor to celebrate the extraordinary careers and enduring legacy of my father and aunt, who were among the biggest musical stars of their era. With Kathleen Riley's seminal biography as its foundation, and the creative team in place, the story of their partnership both on and off the stage is in the best care".
McKenzie added: "Guided by the incredible filmmaking team led by director Paul King, writer Steven Levenson, producer Amy Pascal and Tom Holland, I know their legacy will be beautifully brought to life for a whole new generation"
Holland is also producing via his Billy 17 banner, alongside Amy Pascal and Rachel O'Connor for Pascal Pictures, and Ben Holden and Josh Hyams for Lightbulb Pictures. Executive producers included Levenson, Harry Holland and Will South for Billy17, and Will Clarke and Andy Mayson via Altitude Films.
