Isla Johnston In Talks To Lead Baz Luhrmann’s JEHANNE D'ARC Epic At Warner Bros
Newcomer Isla Johnston ("Invasion", "The Queen's Gambit") is in talks to lead the upcoming Warner Bros epic "Jehanne d'Arc" from director Baz Luhrmann ("Elvis", "The Great Gatsby", "Moulin Rouge"). The film is Luhrmann's passion project and has been in the works for 30 years. It is based on "Schindler's List" auhor Tom Keneally's novel "Blood Red, Sister Rose", and the adaptation is penned by playwright Ava Pickett, who wrote the script with Luhrmann. Pickett said: "What we have on paper is a career-defining role that requires the right qualities, skill set, and an ability to capture the essence of youth in this moment"

The film chronicles the story of Joan of Arc, the young French peasant who believed God had sent her to lead an army and that she would save her country during the Hundred Years' War. The lead role was described as "The ultimate teenage girl coming of age story, set in the Hundred Years' War." Joan was burned at the stake in the 1400s after leading the troops in the Siege of Orleans and pressing for the coronation of Charles VII as the French king during the war. She is considered a patron saint of France.

Pickett recently conducted the first reading of the script for most of the teams from Warner Bros, from production to marketing and publicity. This was done at the Chateau Marmont, in the room where the first draft of "Rebel Without a Cause" was read aloud for Warner Bros executives back in the day. Luhrmann's wife and design partner Catherine Martin backed up Pickett with a visual presentation.

Here's what Luhrmann had to say about the project: "I almost did Alexander the Great and then at one point I was going down the road on Napoleon, but more than ever, I realized I was waiting for the right time to tell this story and the idea of this ultimate teenage girl coming-of-age story set in a 100-year war. She's a young girl who's from a small town who manages to tell this 25-year-old king, 'We're going to be able to unite the country, and you'll be king'. It's that inspiration, that uplift. It's like now where the current generation needs to do what the generation before us did, and that is make space, lift up the new voices and the new energy, and make sure that they’re there to smash through this ossified world."

Austin Butler to Lead Baz Luhrmann's Elvis Presley Biopic
Actor/singer Austin Butler, better known for starring in TV shows like "The Carrie Diaries" and "The Shannara Chronicles", is set to play Elvis Presley in an untitled biopic from Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge", "The Great Gatsby").

The film will explore the legendary artist's growth from dirt poor singer to global icon through the complicated relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks, that spanned over two decades. Luhrmann co-wrote the script with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce, and will also produce. Oscar-winning "The Great Gatsby" production designer and costume designer Catherine Martin will also join the production.

Filming will begin early next year in Queensland, Australia. Warner Bros. will distribute worldwide. Other contenders for the lead role included Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller and Harry Styles.

Butler's resume also includes an acclaimed Broadway debut in the George C. Wolfe-directed adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh", in which he played the role of Don Parritt, and a role in Jim Jarmusch's latest film "The Dead Don't Die". He can also be seen later this month in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".

Here's what Luhrmann had to say about the casting:
"I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist. Throughout the casting process, it was an honor for me to encounter such a vast array of talent. I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway, and through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures."

warcraft-movie-release-date

A bunch of new release dates have been announced today:
  • Duncan Jones' "Warcraft" movie will be released on March 11, 2016. The release date has been moved from December 18, 2015, because "Star Wars: Episode VII" will be released on that day and it's quite obvious who would come out a winner from that face off.

  • Universal Pictures' remake of "The Mummy" will be released on April 22, 2016. The remake will be directed by Andy Muschietti ("Mama"), produced by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci ("Star Trek") and written by Jon Spaihts ("Prometheus").

  • Director Rob Cohen's "The Boy Next Door", a psychological thriller starring Jennifer Lopez, will be released on January 23, 2015.

friday-the-13th-reboot

This bit of news also qualifies as a release date update, but it's something that deserves a little more writing space. Paramount Pictures has decided that the release date for a new "Friday the 13th" reboot should be March 13, 2015. This would be the 13th installment in the horror franchise. The series has been rebooted before in 2009 by producers Sean S. Cunningham, director of the original, and Michael Bay. While the idea of a second reboot might sound dumb, it's actually something which was expected due to the fact that Paramount picked up the full rights for the Friday the 13th franchise from Warner Bros. in exchange for Warner getting in on "Interstellar", Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi flick. Here is the official announcement which came via Twitter:
"Exhibitor Relations ‏@ERCboxoffice
Paramount sets FRIDAY THE 13th for March 13, 2015. Not a sequel to the reboot, mind you, another reboot entirely.

baz-luhrmann-napoleon-biopic
Earlier this year it was announced that Steven Spielberg would be picking up Stanley Kubrick's long-developed project, a "Napoleon" biopic, and that the director intends on developing it as a miniseries for HBO. Now it seems that Spielberg and HBO are interested in letting Baz Luhrmann direct it. Luhrmann, whose work includes films like "Romeo + Juliet", "Moulin Rouge" and this year's "The Great Gatsby", seems like an interesting choice and HBO will surely provide a considerable budget for the project. This isn't the only Napoleon Bonaparte project out there. Warner Bros. is also producing a biopic which will be directed by Rupert Sanders ("Snow White and the Huntsman").

quentin-tarantino-new-film
Quentin Tarantino has revealed in an interview that his next project will be another Western, but not a sequel to "Django Unchained". The filmmaker had previously stated his intention of creating a "rewritten history" trilogy which would include Django and "Inglorious Basterds". Also, it seems that Tarantino is almost finished writing the script, so we should find out pretty soon what the movie will be about.
"I haven’t told anyone this publicly, but I will say the genre: It’s a western. I had so much fun doing Django, and I love westerns so much that after I taught myself how to make one, it’s like 'OK! Let me make another one now that I know what I’m doing'."

The Great Gatsby on DVD and Blu-Ray

THE GREAT GATSBY

Rated: PG-13 | Runtime: 142 min | Studio: Warner Bros.

The Great Gatsby DVD Blu-Ray
Synopsis: "The Great Gatsby" follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

The Great Gatsby Leonardo DiCaprio Carey Mulligan

A batch of 7 movie clips for Baz Luhrmann's version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" have been released by Warner Bros. and brought online by Collider. With all the sparkly publicity which tried to sell the film as a non-classical adaptation of the book, the clips shown by the studio focus on exactly the classical feel of the story. So, no Fergie songs here. Instead, we do get some rather bland acting from the cast. Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Debicki look the part, but don't seem to act the part. Only Joel Edgerton feels like the right choice for the role and really puts his back into it. It could just be a false first impression, or maybe the studio chose the wrong clips to promote the film. Or, maybe the clips don't work so well out of context. I do hope they pull it off, because I'm a fan of risk-taking filmmakers and have loved Luhrmann's films so far. "The Great Gatsby" opens on May 10, 2013 (in 3D).

The Great Gatsby 2013 Film Image

A new extended TV spot and 2 banner posters for Baz Luhrmann's version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" have been released. The TV spot is kind of scary. It features a song called "A Little Party Never Killed No One" by Fergie, Q-Tip and GoonRock as a dubious marketing stunt. I won't go on a rant about how this song doesn't fit the story or the period in time, because this is Baz Luhrmann we're talking about. Think of his "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge" and you get the picture. It just feels like an odd match, trying to use a Fergie song to sell F. Scott Fitzgerald's story to a wider audience. The soundtrack also features Jay-Z, Beyonce, Will.I.Am, Lana Del Rey, Florence + The Machine, The Bryan Ferry Orchestra and GOTYE. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Debicki. "The Great Gatsby" opens on May 10, 2013 (in 3D).

Leonardo DiCaprio Carey Mulligan The Great Gatsby Image

A collection of six new posters has been released for Baz Luhrmann's version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby". Four of the posters are new character posters and the last two are wide banners. This is the third batch of character posters released for the film. Check out the previous ones here and here. I feel like they've sort of run out of new things to display in these posters. The extravagant adaptation stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Debicki. "The Great Gatsby" opens on May 10, 2013 (in 3D).

Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprion in THE GREAT GATSBY

A new trailer and poster have been released for Baz Luhrmann's version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby". This lengthier trailer has a much wider scope regarding the plot and also showcases the lush visuals and the soundtrack which features original songs from artists like Beyonce, Andre 3000, Lana Del Rey and Florence + The Machine. I'm not sure if Luhrmann's over-the-top visual style is what this story really needs, but I can't judge the movie in advance, because the director is really one of the few who can pull something like this off. This is either going to be a massive masterpiece, or a resounding failure. "The Great Gatsby" stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Debicki, and will open on May 10, 2013 (in 3D).

Check out the trailer and poster after the jump.

The Great Gatsby Banner Poster

Six new character posters have been released for Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby". There's not too much to these posters. They're the usual character portraits. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Debicki. Fans of the novel expecting a classical approach to their favorite book should probably curb their expectations, or avoid this altogether. Luhrmann has also directed "Romeo + Juliet" (also starring DiCaprio) and "Moulin Rouge". He can certianly handle something more subdued (see "Australia"), but judging from the trailers and the fact that the music for the film will be composed by Jay-Z, I wouldn't count on it. "The Great Gatsby" opens on May 10, 2013 (in 3D).

Check out the posters after the jump (click to enlage).
