Dave Bautista Set to Play Kratos in GOD OF WAR Series
Dave Bautista is set to star in the lead role of the Amazon Prime Video series "God of War" based on the video game franchise of the same name. It was first revealed earlier this month that Bautista was in talks for the role of Kratos after Ryan Hurst suffered a torn bicep while filming, which requires surgery and would have delayed production into 2027. The recasting is now finally official.

"God of War" received a two-season order, with both seasons set to shoot back-to-back. Filming originally started in Vancouver this February, and production is expected to resume in the coming weeks. All scenes featuring Hurst will have to be reshot. Callum Vinson remains attached to play Kratos' son Atreus. The cast also includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

The series will follow the story of the two most recent "God of War" games. Here is the official synopsis: "Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human".

Ronald D. Moore writes, executive produces and showruns under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

Executive producers also include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis co-executive produce.

Ryan Hurst To Play Kratos In God Of War Series

Ryan Hurst ("Sons of Anarchy", "The Abandons") is set to star as Kratos in Amazon's "God of War" series based on the popular PlayStation game franchise. The Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios show has been given a two-season order. Pre-production is underway in Vancouver, and casting has begun. Hurst's previously played Thor in the PlayStation game "God of War Ragnarök", receiving a BAFTA nomination for his performance.

The "God of War" TV series hails from writer, showrunner and executive producer Ronald D. Moore ("Outlander", "For All Mankind"), and it follows father and son, Kratos and Atreus, as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

The titular character Kratos is Spartan by birth and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in the service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle. Kratos vanquished mortals, creatures, and gods alike. In the process, he became an iconic character in pop culture, known for his stoic nature, unchallenged combat skills, and tragic past.

The franchise is comprised of 10 games, but the live-action series will closely follow the path of the last two games, which focus more on Kratos and his ten-year-old son, Atreus, starting a whole new chapter in the legendary series as the father-son relationship will be the heartbeat of the new show.

Frederick E.O. Toye ("Shōgun", "The Boys") will direct the first two episodes. "God of War" is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. In addition to Moore, executive producers also include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis co-executive produce.

Hurst can next be seen in Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic "The Odyssey", which opens in theaters on July 17, 2026.
