"The Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal reunite for the historical crime drama "Detroit". The film is set amidst the 1967 Detroit Rebellion and is based on the Algiers Motel incident of the 12th Street Riot where three young African American men were murdered as the city was under a curfew and the National Guard patrolled the streets. The cast includes John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Anthony Mackie, John Krasinski, Jack Reynor and Hannah Murray.

"Detroit" was released in select theaters on July 28th, 2017 and expanded nationwide on August 4th. It received mostly positive reviews from critics who praised its direction, script and cast, although some voices have also questioned the film's historical accuracy, and commented on the flat characters and unimaginative direction.

At the box-office the film was a disappointment, grossing only $7.1 million and finishing in 8th place in its first wide weekend.

Johnny Depp to star in crime thriller Triple Frontier
Motivated by his successful (but mostly unrewarded) role as Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in last year's "Black Mass", Johnny Depp is looking to star in yet another crime drama. The actor is in negotiations to join the long-gestating "Triple Frontier", a film that focuses on the organized crime operating in the Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil border zone. Tom Hanks is also attached to co-star in the film.

The project is in the works since 2009 with "The Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal set to reunite. The project fell apart when the studio asked Bigelow to cast Will Smith in exchange for the requested $80 million budget. J.C. Chandor ("A Most Violent Year") is now set to helm the project with Boal still on board.

Depp recently finished work on "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" which will be released in 2017, and he can be seen this year in Disney's "Alice Through the Looking Glass" and Kevin Smith's horror comedy "Yoga Hosers".

Kathryn Bigelow Photo
"Zero Dark Thirty" and "The Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow has signed on to direct an untitled film about United States Army soldier Bowe Bergdahl who was captured by the Taliban after leaving his post in unclear circumstances and held for five years before being released in 2014 in a controversial prisoner exchange. Bergdahl is currently facing desertion charges.

Bigelow will collaborate with writer Mark Boal once again and "Zero Dark Thirty" producer Megan Ellison will back the production. Ellison and Bigelow are also developing another project, "The True American", based on the book "The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas" by Anand Giridharadas, about post-9/11, self-styled "American Terrorist" Mark Stroman who murdered two immigrants in Texas, while a third man survived being shot in the head during Stroman's spree.

Bigelow and Boal were previously trying to get the South American drug trade movie "Triple Frontier" off the ground, but that project has been "pushed to the side" for now.

Kathryn Bigelow, director of "The Hurt Locker"
Good news travel fast it seems. As soon as the world received word that Osama Bin Laden was found and killed by Navy SEALs, Hollywood shifted in gear and gave a warm go-ahead to the award winning team of screenwriter Mark Boal and director Kathryn Bigelow on a movie that will feature the feared terrorist leader's death. The project itself was alredy being in preparations since December, and was supposedly about the same elite crew that eliminated Bin Laden. Now the movie will feature the 40-minute firefight, which means Mark Boal will have to operate some rewrites on his script. No doubt the movie will peak the interest of producers and studios, far more than the "The Hurt Locker", written and directed by Boal and Bigelow respectively, ever did. Besides, having an Academy Award winning director behind the movie is no small thing. Shooting (bad choice of words?) should start this summer and Bigelow's other project "Triple Frontier" will be left behind. No word on casting, yet.
