Antonio Banderas Joins Nicolas Cage In TRUE DETECTIVE Season 5

Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of the fifth season of HBO's anthology crime drama series "True Detective". Issa Lopez will return as writer, director and showrunner, after overseeing Season 4 ("Night Country"). Production on Season 5 is set to start in 2027.

Plot details are mostly being kept under wraps, but it has been revealed that the new season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. Nicolas Cage will lead the cast as Henry Logan, while Banderas is set to play Rai Garcia. Cage's casting was officially confirmed at last week's New York Comic-Con, a year after it was first revealed that the actor was in talks to join the cast.

Lopez will also executive produce alongside Cage, Banderas, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Joji Fukunaga.

HBO's Head of Drama Series Francesca Orsim said the following about the new season: "Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It's a different milieu but just as powerful".

In an interview, Lopez mentioned that the new season will have "important connections" to the events in Alaska from the previous installment. However, she also added that it is "a new story, new characters, everything".

Created by Pizzolatto, "True Detective" has been nominated for 41 Emmys and has won six, including for actors Harrelson, McConaughey, Mahershala Ali and Jodie Foster. Season 4 was the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers.
