Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are once again turning to Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay to keep the "Transformers" cinematic franchise going. According to sources, Steven Spielberg has been called upon by Paramount to be the creative spearhead of a new live-action "Transformers" movie. Veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is also back.
Michael Bay is in early negotiations to once again direct from a script by Jason Fuchs ("It: Welcome to Derry", "Wonder Woman"). Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it has been reported that the film will be set in modern day. Bay previously directed the first five "Transformers" films, between 2007 and 2017.
Spielberg will executive produce and lead the creative direction for the eighth live-action installment, the same way he did for the first two "Transformers" films that launched the franchise in 2007 and 2009. Spielberg and di Bonaventura are tasked with aligning the new film to the spirit of the early "Transformers" films.
Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro will also produce. Spielberg was brought back on board after the 2025 merger between Skydance and Paramount Pictures, and only agreed to take a more hands-on-role in the franchise after reading Fuchs' latest script. Bay came on board after reading the script and meeting with Spielberg earlier this week.
The "Transformers" movies have generated more than $5.4 billion in global box office revenue and turned Hasbro's toy brand into a worldwide phenomenon. The change in creative direction was no doubt prompted by the modest results of their latest films, including "Bumblebee" and "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts".
