Eddie Murphy has signed on to star in Peacock's new drama series "The Chairman" created by Matthew Weiner ("Mad Men"). The show hasn't been grenlit, yet, but if it moves forward, it will be Murphy's first role in a live-action scripted series. His only scripted TV role before "The Chairman" was voice acting on "The PJs", an animated series he co-created. He also created "The Royal Family" for CBS.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. Murphy and Weiner serve as executive producers. The series is produced by Universal Television alongside 101 Studios, which is run by "Yellowstone" executive producer David Glasser and is under a first-look film and television deal at NBCUniversal that began in January.
"The Chairman" is the first project to originate from former Paramount executive Chris McCarthy's consulting deal with NBCUniversal.
Weiner is best known for creating and serving as showrunner on "Mad Men", which ran for seven seasons on AMC from 2007 to 2015. He was also a writer and executive producer on "The Sopranos".
Murphy can next be heard reprising his role as Donkey in "Shrek 5", which is set to be released next year.
