Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow ("Shakespeare in Love", "Iron Man") is set to star in A24's upcoming drama series "The Apology", which landed a two-season order at Netflix. This will be the actress' first-ever lead television role. The show hails from creator, showrunner and writer Joe Murtagh ("The Woman in the Wall") and acclaimed Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg ("Another Round").
Paltrow will star as Evelyn Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a cold case that gripped the nation. When a stranger suddenly appears and confesses, justice finally seems possible, until Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, learn the killer may get off with a reduced sentence. Faced with that unbearable truth, Evelyn and Caleb decide to take matters into their own hands.
The series will be executive produced by Joe Hipps of Cut To, alongside Murtagh, Vinterberg and Paltrow. A24 is the studio. The production comes amid an executive restructuring at Netflix spearheaded across its scripted divisions. The streamer plans to lay off 6% of its employees, and the shake-up includes Chief content officer Bela Bajaria, and head of film Dan Lin.
