Keanu Reeves has signed on to star in the Netflix action movie "Maelstrom", after "Reacher" star Alan Ritchson dropped out of the project. The reason for Ritchson's exit has not been revealed. The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra ("Carry-On", "Non-Stop") from a script penned by Mark Bianculli ("How to Rob a Bank") from a first draft by late writer Gregory Fitzpatrick.
The film revolves around a Federal Marshal who is guarding the fiancée of an arms dealer who is seeking witness protection as she prepares to testify against him. Events unfold over one evening as a hurricane rolls in, blocking communication from the outside world and preventing reinforcements from arriving. Together, the duo has to fight the onslaught of men working for the arms deal while dealing with the natural disaster outside their window.
The "Maelstrom" spec script was originally sold to Warner Bros. in 1993 for roughly $225,000 to $625,000 by producer Jeff Robinov ("Nosferatu") when he was an agent, and the project was described as "Die Hard in a hurricane". Robinov remains attached to the project, which marks his first under a new Netflix deal. Jeff Robinov was the president of Warner Bros. Pictures from November, 2007 to July, 2013, shepherding billion-dollar franchises like "The Dark Knight" trilogy and "The Hangover".
Reeves is also in talks to lead James Wan's remake of "The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil" for Paramount, and he will return as the voice of Shadow in 2027's "Sonic the Hedgehog 4".
