Not unexpectedly, Lionsgate is moving forward with a sequel to last year's R-rated Christmas sleeper hit "The Housemaid". The new installment will be titled "The Housemaid's Secret" and will be released in theaters on December 17, 2027. Sydney Sweeney is returning for the sequel alongside Michele Morrone, who also appeared in the first film. Kirsten Dunst is joining the cast.
Based on Freida McFadden's bestselling novel, the sequel picks up as Sweeney’s Millie takes a job keeping house for a woman she's never allowed to see, only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own. The sequel will begin production later this year with Paul Feig returning to direct, and Rebecca Sonnenshine also back as the writer.
Producers will include Hidden Pictures' Todd Lieberman, Feig and Laura Fischer via Pretty Dangerous Pictures, and Sweeney through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner. Carly Elter, who oversaw the first movie for Hidden Pictures, is returning as executive producer. Alex Young of Hidden Pictures will also executive produce. Fifty Fifty's Kaylee McGregor will co-produce. Chelsea Kujawa and Maria Ascanio are overseeing the project for Lionsgate.
Lionsgate is definitely confident about this one, since it's December 2027 release date will pit it against "Avengers: Secret Wars" and "Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum". The first film opened on December 19, 2025, going up against "Avatar: Fire and Ash", "The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants" and "David". It opened in third place with only $19 million, but continued to perform well week after week. It went on to gross $126 million in North America and another $271.8 million from foreign markets. That's a total gross of $398.2 million worldwide against a modest $35 million budget.
The studio is planning to turn "The Housemaid" into a major franchise, and hopes to adapt more of McFadden's novels, including a third book titled "The Housemaid Is Watching".
