dane dehaan amazing spider-man 2
Director Marc Webb has announced that Dane DeHaan will be playing Harry Osborn in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2". DeHaan proved his acting range in the superhero found-footage film "Chronicle" and should fit nicely into Webb's vision for the Spider-Man franchise. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will be reprising their roles and will also be joined by Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane and Jamie Foxx as the villain Electro. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is set for release on May 2, 2014. Here is the official casting press release:
"Dane DeHaan will join the cast of the next installment of The Amazing Spider-Man™ along side Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Shailene Woodley as Columbia Pictures prepares to begin production on the next chapter of the blockbuster franchise, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of production for the studio.

The screenplay is by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt. The film will be directed by Marc Webb and produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.

The casting of DeHaan as Harry Osborn was confirmed this morning in a tweet by Webb (@MarcW) who wrote “Meet Harry Osborn. So excited to have him on board. @danedehaan.”

“Dane is an exciting and extraordinary young actor and he is a fantastic addition to our cast,” Webb said.

The new film in the Spider-Man saga is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014. Production will begin in early 2013.

Webb, Garfield and Stone previously teamed on this summer’s blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man, which has taken in more than $751 million worldwide.

DeHaan caught moviegoers’ attention with his performances in four 2012 releases: Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, opposite Daniel Day-Lewis and Lukas Haas; John Hillcoat’s Lawless, alongside Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, and Jason Clarke; Bradley Rust Gray’s Jack & Diane, with Juno Temple and Riley Keough; and one of the year’s biggest sleeper hits, the adventure thriller Chronicle, directed by Josh Trank. He began his film career with director John Sayles and actor Chris Cooper in Amigo.

DeHaan next stars in Place Beyond the Pines alongside Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling. In addition he will star in Atom Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot, with Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, about the fate of the West Memphis Three; and John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings, with Jack Huston, Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Foster, and Kyra Sedgwick, set in 1944 amidst the Beat Generation.

Mr. DeHaan first came to industry attention with his portrayal of Jesse in the third season of the critically applauded drama series In Treatment, starring alongside Gabriel Byrne. This was followed by a guest arc in the fourth season of the popular horror series True Blood.

In 2010, he received an Obie Award for his performance in Annie Baker’s The Aliens, directed by Sam Gold. The Rattlestick Theater production was cited as “Play of the Year” by The New York Times. Mr. DeHaan made his Broadway debut in with American Buffalo, Robert Falls’ 2008 staging of the classic David Mamet play."

Director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will return for the sequel to this year's "The Amazing Spider-Man" reboot. Sony hired screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to rewrite the sequel's script even before the first film was released. The original draft belonged to James Vanderbilt who also wrote the first film's script. The release date for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is set for May 2, 2014.

And speaking of reboots, director Len Wiseman ("Underworld", the "Total Recall" remake) has been hired by Universal to helm their reboot of The Mummy". The reboot is developed by writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The duo is also working on a "Van Helsing" reboot with Tom Cruise attached to star. The script for "The Mummy" reboot is being written by Jon Spaiths ("Prometheus") and it is said to be a much darker take on the material.

Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank are joining Tommy Lee Jones' film "The Homesman". Jones is directing, writing and producing the film about "a claim-jumping rascal (played by Jones) and a frontierwoman (Swank) as they escort three insane women from Nebraska to Iowa and battle the harsh conditions of the praire".

Tom Hardy is in talks to star in a film about George Mallory and his three attempts to become the first man to climb Mt. Everest, in the 1920s. The script, written by Sheldon Turner ("Up in the Air") is based on Jeffrey Archer's book "Paths of Glory, Everest".

Michael Bay has made some interesting statements in a recent interview, about his return to the "Transformers" franchise, as well as how the fourth film will fit in the series. Here's what the director, who is currently working on a small dark comedy called "Pain and Gain" (starring Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg) has to say :
"I thought I was done. Then the ride came out [at Universal Studios Hollywood] and the two-and-a-half-hour lines. And then you’re thinking, Oh my God, someone’s going to take this over. And you start doing a lot of soul-searching. Like, OK, I’m about to do a little movie, Pain & Gain … and the studio says they want to restart the franchise. And someone could come in here and screw it up, you know? So I’m thinking that if I do this last one, we set it on a new footing, we change a lot of things — but we keep the history of the three in place. But we broaden it so it can be set up and be carried on — it would have a better chance for survival, I guess. You know?

So it was just one of those things. It’s like, when you look what’s going on in the film business with the franchise frenzy right now, why is Cameron doing two more Avatar movies? Why is Peter Jackson doing three more Hobbit movies that are in the same world as Lord of the Rings? When you have a franchise, it’s very hard to give it up.”

No [it’s not a reboot]. We’re basically taking from the history of where it was — or where we left it in Chicago. And we’re going to carry it on from there."

Sir Ben Kingsley is interested in joining "Mary Mother of Christ", a film about Mary's defiance of King Herod in order to save her son, Jesus. The film is directed by Alister Grierson ("Sanctum") and written by Barbara Nicolosi and Benedict Fitzgerald (who co-wrote "The Passion of the Christ"). Kingsley is looking to join the film as Herod. The rest of the cast includes Odeya Rush ("The Odd Life of Timothy Green") as Mary, Peter O'Toole as Symeon and Julia Ormond as Mary's cousin, Elizabeth. Other actors yet to be officially confirmed are Dame Judi Dench as Anna the Prophetess and Hugh Bonneville as Satan.

The first official images from the new Princess Diana biopic have been released (above). The movie stars Naomi Watts as the Princess of Wales and the title has been changed from "Caught in Flight" to "Diana". Director Oliver Hirschbiegel ("Downfall") is at the helm of this project and the screenplay is written by Stephen Jeffreys ("The Libertine"). The story focuses on Princess Diana's love affair with heart surgeon Hasnat Kahn, who will be played by Naveen Andrews (Sayid from "Lost"). So far there are no known US or UK release dates, but France will get a chance to see "Diana" on February 20, 2013.

  • It has been officially announced that "The Amazing Spider-Man" is the first of a planned trilogy. The announcement was made via Facebook : "It’s finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero’s journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents." Also, writers Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci ("Transformers", "Cowboys & Aliens") have already been hired to perform rewrites on the sequel's script which was originally written by James Vanderbilt, who also penned the script for "The Amazing Spider-Man".

  • Guillermo Del Toro's sci-fi monster flick "Pacific Rim" has begun its teasing campaign. We have the first official image from the movie (below) featuring actors Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi and some kick-ass robotic gear in the background, and a new teaser poster featured at the Comic Con (left). The movie also stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins Jr. and Charlie Day and is scheduled for release on July 12, 2013 in the US.

  • And back to sequels, here's one that just keeps on coming, but can't quite get there : "Ghostbusters 3". After Bill Murray chose not to get involved in this long-delayed sequel, Dan Aykroyd continues the struggle to deliver a third installment in the beloved franchise. Initially, Aykroyd announced last year that the sequel will begin filming this spring, but it's summer already and nothing happened. This week, while attending an event, the actor responded the following when asked about the status of the project : "We’ve got a new writing staff working on it now. It’s got to be prefect. That’s the whole thing. There’s no point in doing it unless it’s perfect. So that’s what we’re up to now." The poor man is willing, but I doubt we're ever going to see a reboot of the franchise anytime soon. Maybe it's for the best.
