Curry Barker To Write And Direct A24 Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot

A24 won the feature rights to the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" franchise in a heated auction last year, and now they have announced that "Obsession" helmer Curry Barker will write and direct a highly anticipated reboot. The new film has been described as a "reimagining" of the iconic 1974 horror film directed by Tobe Hooper from a script he co-wrote alongside Kim Henkel. Plot details are under wraps.

The new film will be produced by Roy Lee and Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures, and Stuart Manashil and Exurbia Films' Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel. Ben Ross of Image Nation serves as executive producer. A "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" television series is also being developed by Glen Powel, Dan Cohen, and director JT Mollner.

Barker was best known for being part of the Internet sketch comedy duo "that's a bad idea" alongside Cooper Tomlinson. Before "Obsession", he directed the 2024 found-footage horror film "Milk & Serial", which had a budget of $800 and only took four months to make. After failing to secure a distributor, Barker and Tomlinson released the film on YouTube for free.

Curry Barker is currently in production on "Anything But Ghosts" at Blumhouse, serving as director, co-writer and star. The film centers on two fraudulent paranormal investigators who are forced to face real ghosts, and the lies underpinning their business.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Tv Series In Works From Jt Mollner Glen Powell Roy Lee

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is the latest franchise getting turned into a TV series after A24 secured the television and film rights after a months-long bidding war. The show hails from "Strange Darling" filmmaker JT Mollner, who also executive produces alongside Spooky Picture's Roy Lee and Steven Schneider, Stuart Manashil, ImageNation's Ben Ross, and Barnstorm's Glen Powell and Dan Cohen. Exurbia Films is the primary production company, with Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel as producers.

There is also a movie currently in early stages of development from the same producing team and ImageNation, but Mollner is not attached to that project. Previous reports indicated the the film is headed to Netflix, but nothing has been announced officially.

The auction for "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was administered by Verve and drew the interest of several studios and high-level creative teams including Oz Perkins, Jordan Peele and Taylor Sheridan. Verve has repped rights to the slasher franchise since 2017.

Nollner said in a statement: "I've said publicly that I'm not interested in remaking perfect films, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect film. Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel created something bold, transgressive and truly seminal that holds up even today as the gold standard for horror. When the opportunity for a longform exploration into this world arose, I saw it as a fresh way in, as well as a way to honor the existing folklore. I can't imagine better partners for this approach than A24. This is truly an honor."

Powell added: "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of my favorite films. It defined a generation of horror films and over half a century after its release, it remains one of the definitive movies of my home state. I'm honored to have Barnstorm help bring in a new chapter for such an iconic title and franchise. With a marquee home in A24 and visionary filmmaker with JT Mollner, alongside our top shelf producing partners, I couldn't have dreamed of a better team for such a dream property."

Henkel said: "It was a difficult decision, but A24's embrace of boundary-testing genre film, and its record of working with artists who are inclined to test boundaries made them a compelling choice. Plus, we believe having a great creative and producing team — JT Mollner, Roy Lee, Dan Cohen and Glen Powell — in place gives us the best shot at a series that could be genuinely eye-opening and unexpected. There's an epic tale lurking in the Chainsaw backstory."

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2022) - Trailer, Images and Posters

"Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is a horror film directed by David Blue Garcia from a script by Chris Thomas Devlin and story by "Don't Breathe" helmer Fede Alvarez and writer Rodo Sayagues. The film is the ninth installment in the long-running slasher franchise, and a sequel to the original 1974 film of the same name. The cast includes Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Mark Burnham, Jacob Latimore, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouéré, Alice Krige, Jessica Allain and Nell Hudson. The film premiered on February 18, 2022.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 Trailer


Today we have new trailers for:
  • "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", the ninth installment in the long-running horror franchise, and a direct sequel to the 1974 original film directed by Tobe Hooper. The film was written by "Don't Breathe" creators Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, and directed by David Blue Garcia ("Tejano").
  • The Dutch historical drama "My Best Friend Anne Frank based on the book "Memories of Anne Frank: Reflections of a Childhood Friend".
  • The sci-fi drama "After Yang" starring Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith. The film is the second feature by Kogonada, a Korean-American film essayist who made his directorial debut with the 2017 drama "Columbus".
  • The documentary "Blues on Beale" filmed entirely in the Blues clubs on famed Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, and featuring Grammy award winner Bobby Rush, Grammy nominee Shemekia Copeland, award-winner Castro Coleman and a host of acclaimed musicians.

I'm a little confused here. Apparently, producer Carl Mazzocone and director John Luessenhop ("Takers") are working on a remake of Tobe Hooper's cult classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". I'm confused, because, I thought we already had remake, produced by Michael Bay, in 2003, directed by Marcus Nispel ("Conan the Barbarian 3D"). That movie even had a prequel in 2006. Nevertheless, here they are, doing an update of the original story, in 3D. Well, at least it's not produced by Michael Bay. The movie is set for release on October 5, 2012.

So far it has been revealed that the story will take place after the events of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original. The screenplay was written by Luessenhop, Adam Marcus ("Jason Goes to Hell") and Debra Sullivan ("Danielle Steel's Once in a Lifetime"). The cast so far includes Alexandra Daddario ("Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief") and Bill Moseley ("Repo! The Genetic Opers"). How this one will turn out, we'll see, but I have a feeling this should have been a direct-to-video release, instead of slashing our wallets wide open with the 3D ticket sales.
