Tom Hanks To Star In Baseball Movie The Comebacker

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks is set to reteam with director Marielle Heller ("A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood") for the upcoming baseball dramedy "The Comebacker" based on the short story of the same name written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Dave Eggers. Eggers also wrote "A Hologram for the King" and "The Circle", which were also adapted into films starring Hanks. The project has already attracted multiple studio bidders.

The title refers to a baseball term which describes an injury caused by a ball that is hit directly back to the pitcher. The first in a series of shorts from the collection titled "The Forgetters", Eggers' "The Comebacker" follows a baseball pitcher who is struck in the head and injured by a comebacker. The pitcher suddenly develops the ability for poetic speech, which inspires an aging sportswriter named Lionel, played by Hanks, to write stories that resonate with readers across the country.

Although the short story centers on the San Francisco Giants, it has been reported that the screenplay will revolve around the New York Mets. It also seems that Grammy winner Bad Bunny and Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo are in talks to star. Both Hanks and Heller will produce the film through their respective production labels.
