Robert Downey Jr. to Star in THE SYMPATHIZER TV Series on HBO
MCU alum Robert Downey Jr. is set to star in and produce the upcoming HBO/A24 espionage thriller series "The Sympathizer", based on Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name that has been described as a "blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping spy novel and a powerful story of love and friendship".

The story follows the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States. The lead role has yet to be cast, and a worldwide search is underway for the predominantly Vietnamese ensemble. Filming is set to take place in Los Angeles and in Vietnam.

"Oldboy" director Park Chan-wook is on board as co-showrunner alongside Don McKellar ("Sensitive Skin", "Last Night"). Robert Downey Jr. will play several supporting roles as the main antagonists: an up-and-coming Orange County congressman, a CIA agent and a Hollywood film director, among others, all of whom represent a different arm of the American establishment.

Here is what the actor had to say about the project:
"Adapting Mr. Nguyen’s important and masterful work requires a visionary team. With director Park at the helm, I expect this to be a creative producing adventure for Susan, me and Team Downey and a stimulating process for myself in playing these complex supporting roles. A24 and HBO are the perfect combination of partners and co-parents. … It’s exactly the type of challenge I’ve been craving, and I believe we will deliver an exceptional viewing experience to our audience."
HBO and A24 previously worked together on the on the Emmy-winning series "Euphoria", and Olivier Assayas' remake of his own "Irma Vep" starring Alicia Vikander.

Downey and his producing partners also worked with HBO on "Perry Mason", and re-upped their overall deal following the success of that show.
