Paul Mescal & Jessie Buckley to Reunite for Romantic Drama HOLD ON TO YOUR ANGELS

Oscar winner Jessie Buckley is set to reunite with her "Hamnet" co-star Paul Mescal in the upcoming romantic drama "Hold On To Your Angels" which will be written and directed by Oscar nominee Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts Of The Southern Wild", "Wendy"). Production is set to begin in February.

The film is set on the edge of South Louisiana and it follows a hell-bound outlaw (Mescal) and a ferocious shepherd of lost souls (Buckley) who fall in catastrophic love as their crumbling bayou paradise drags them under.

Zeitlin had this to say about the project "'Hold On To Your Angels' is the most impossible love story I've ever witnessed — an outlaw romance for the end of America, set on the crumbling edge of South Louisiana. I've been dreaming of telling it since its hero, Pam Harper, walked into an audition for Beasts of the Southern Wild seventeen years ago. It's a love letter to an endangered way of life — and a rallying cry for empathy across a fractured planet, said".

The film is produced by Plan B ("F1", "Moonlight") alongside Alex Coco ("Anora") via his Rapt Film banner in association with Fit Via Vi with Bill Way and Elliott Whitton serving as executive producers. The Veterans is handling international sales, with domestic distribution rights represented by CAA Media Finance.

Plan B said: "Benh Zeitlin absolutely stunned us and the world at large with the cosmic sorcery of 'Beasts Of The Southern Wild'. With 'Hold On To Your Angels', Benh has set his powerful mix of intense realism, myth, and magic against the large scale of an epic love story. "Hamnet" is a period drama directed by Chloe Zhao ("Nomadland") from a script she co-wrote alongside Maggie O'Farrell based on the latter's 2020 novel. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes, the film dramatizes the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece "Hamlet". "Hamnet" is nominated for eight Oscars at the 98th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director and Actress (Buckley). The film was released in theaters on December 5, 2025, and via streaming on February 3, 2026.

Pedro Pascal in Talks to Join Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR Sequel

"The Last of Us" star Pedro Pascal is in final negotiations to join the cast of Parmount's upcoming untitled "Gladiator" sequel directed by Ridley Scott from a script by David Scarpa ("The Last Castle", "All the Money in the World").

While plot details are being kept under wraps, it has been revealed that the sequel will follow Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, the son of Lucilla, whose role is set to be reprised by Connie Nielsen. The cast will also include Barry Keoghan as Emperor Geta, Joseph Quinn ("Stranger Things") as Emperor Caracalla, and Denzel Washington in an undisclosed role. Pascal's role is also unknown.

Scott also will produce, along with Scott Free president Michael Pruss as well as Doug Wick & Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. Also returning from the original film are cinematographer John Mathieson, production designer Arthur Max and costume designer Janty Yates.

The release date has been set for November 22, 2024.

• "Carmen", a modern-day reimagining of the celebrated opera from writer/director Benjamin Millepied, the former principal dancer of the New York City Ballet. The cast includes Melissa Barrera ("Scream", "In the Heights") and Paul Mescal ("Aftersun").
• The action comedy "The Machine" starring Bert Kreischer, Mark Hamill and Stephanie Kurtzuba.

Paul Mescal To Star In Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR Sequel

Ridley Scott is finally getting his chance to direct a sequel to one of his most successful films, the 2000 blockbuster "Gladiator". Paramount will develop the film. The director has even found his leading man in Paul Mescal, best known for his role in the miniseries "Normal People", which earned him an Emmy nomination.

The film's protagonist played by Mescal will be Lucius, the son of Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen in the original film, and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). The story is set years after the first film and finds Lucius a grown man. In the original, Russell Crowe's Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, which left a strong impression on the young Lucius.

A final draft of the script written by David Scarpa ("The Last Castle", "All the Money in the World") was finished in November, and Scott started searching for a leading man, and Mescal turned out to be his top choice. While Mescal's deal is not closed, it looks like he's a lock for the role. The rest of the cast for "Gladiator 2" has not yet been announced.

The project has been a passion project for Scott ever since the first film opened to great success, but it wasn't until 2018 that the project started to gain steam. As soon as Scott finished work on the historical epic "Napoleon" (also starring Crowe in the titular role), the director seemed eager to make the "Gladiator" sequel his next project.

Scott will also produce, along with Scott Free President Michael Pruss, as well as Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. Also returning from the original film are costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max. The original film was a co-production with Universal, and as such, the studio has the right to partner again when the project is packaged.

"Normal People" is a new drama series from Hulu and BBC Three based on Sally Rooney's novel of the same name. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson ("What Richard Did", "Frank") and Hettie Macdonald ("Beautiful Thing"), the series follows Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal), from different backgrounds but the same small town in Ireland, as they weave in and out of each other's romantic lives.

"Normal People" premiered on April 26, 2020 on BBC One in the U.K. and on Hulu in the U.S. on April 29, 2020.
