Lord Of The Rings Hunt For Gollum Cast Announced

Warner Bros has announced several cast members for the upcoming film "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" at their CinemaCon presentation. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film will be releaseed in theaters on December 17, 2027.

Serkis will reprise the role Gollum/Smeagol, while Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins. Lee Pace also returns as Thranduil from "The Hobbit" movies. Newcomers include Kate Winslet as Marigol, Leo Woodall as Halvard, and Jamie Dornan as Strider, who is later revealed to actually be Aragorn.

The film will chronicle the search for the titular character in the years leading up to "The Fellowship of the Ring". The script is penned by original trilogy screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

Written between 1937 and 1949, and published between 1954 and 1955, the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy started out as a sequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 children's book "The Hobbit", but eventually grew into the epic literary work we know today. Peter Jackson adapted the books into an amazing cinematic trilogy, with each film released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. The films were massive hits grossing a combined total of over $2.9 billion worldwide, and went on to win a total of 17 Academy Awards. The last installment, "The Return of the King" won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture.

Jackson later adapted "The Hobbit", but stretched out the one book into a new trilogy, with each installment released in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Although much less acclaimed, "The Hobbit" trilogy was also massive at the box office, raking in approximatively $2.93 billion worldwide, each movie grossing close to $1 billion.

Stephen Colbert And His Son To Develop New Lord Of The Rings Movie

Warner Bros. has announced that Stephen Colbert and his son are developing a new "Lord of the Rings" movie. The video announcement was posted on the studio's social media accounts and featured franchise director Peter Jackson talking about Andy Serkis' upcoming LOTR film "The Hunt for Gollum": "Andy is doing a terrific job. It's looking amazing. The script is coming together really well and I think it’s going to be a really good film."

Jackson then introduced his "very special partner" who will help develop the next film titled "The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past". At that moment, "The Late Show" host Stephen Colbert patched in through a video call and explained that the plot of his movie is based on chapters from "The Fellowship of the Ring" that didn't make it into Jackson's 2001 adaptation.

Here's what Colbert had to say about the project: "You know what the books mean to me, and what your films mean to me. But the thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in ['The Fellowship of the Ring'] that y'all never developed into the first movie back in the day. It’s basically the chapter 'Three Is Company' [Chapter III] through 'Fog on the Barrow-Downs' [Chapter VIII]. And I thought, 'Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story. Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?"

Colbert added that he discussed the idea with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, and worked out a framing device for the film. Colbert also talked to Jackson, and over the last two years, they’ve worked with screenwriter Philippa Boyens to develop a script.

Here is the film's official synopsis: "Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo — Sam, Merry and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam's daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began".

This isn't Colbert's first collaboration with Peter Jackson. Colbert had a small role in 2013's "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", and also directed Jackson, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen and Elijah Wood in the 2019 short film "Darrylgorn" which was set in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth.

Lord Of The Rings Gollum Movie

Warner Bros is working on developing new live-action "The Lord of the Rings" movies, the first of which is currently known as "The Hunt for Gollum" (working title). Original franchise filmmaker Peter Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the movie and will be deeply involved in its making

Andy Serkis will direct the film which is said to explore storylines yet to be told, and he will also reprise the titular role. The project is currently in the early stages of script development from writers Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

The film will be executive produced by Ken Kamins, with Serkis and The Imaginarium's Jonathan Cavendish, and it's expected to be released in 2026.

Warner Bros. first announced in February 2023 that a deal was made to make "multiple" films based on the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien books. The projects will be developed through WB label New Line Cinema.
